That's an E-Type Front Dérailleur with a Shimano cartridge bottom bracket with Octalink's Pipe Spindle Bottom Bracket Spindle. This is a Shimano E-Type Front Dérailleur. This front Dérailleur fits in between the face of the bottom bracket shell of the frame and the lip of the drive side bottom bracket cup. I am just cleaning some of the goop out of the edge here.
This is sealed cartridge bottom bracket. This is the Shimano Octalink style pipe, its called Pipe Spindle Bottom Bracket. It's a large spindle with a splined end.
This style of bottom bracket cartridge, you can actually use one of two different tools to remove it. You can use this tool, BBT-8, a headset wrench on it, it's a 36 millimeter headset wrench. Its normal right hand threaded, so you unscrew it to the left. That's pretty loose, I am going to go ahead and loosen it up from the drive side. The drive side is reverse threaded, so in order to unscrew it, you can turn it clockwise. Unscrewing on this side with that tool, I am going to keep unscrewing with this tool on the other side.
This cartridge bottom bracket has the drive side. The cup is actually integral with the cartridge. This is not a separate cup that could come off; its one piece. So there is this piece and there is this piece, and that's all there is to this bottom bracket.
Then I am going to clean inside here a little bit, I am going to loosen that up, and I am going to blow it out with some compressed air. Now I am going to put grease on here so that I will reduce the chances of this thing creaking.
I put my greased bottom bracket in there. So I am putting this other cup in partway. Let's go ahead and set it on 500. It's drive side, so it tightens counterclockwise direction.
Okay. So that's side in. I can tighten it in with this and the head wrench. I am just going to use the same tool. Let's go on.
Now all the splines are the same, so there is no particular orientation, but you do want to kind of turn the spindle a little bit, and on this bolt, the spec is 350-435 inch pounds. That's 400. That's that.
Now, it's a little bit tricky with the E Type Front Dérailleur to get the chain out of the way, but you have got to make sure you have the chain. Over here you are not going to be able to get it back on, leave it dangling. Okay.
Both arms are exactly 180 degrees from each other and splined, clicked in, and now I can finish tightening it. I have hit 400 inch pounds, put the chain back on. That's done.
