Fix It Up
Mike: One of the most dramatic ways to update your kitchen comes with the change of the cabinets. Of course, modernizing the appliances, flooring and paint can also help a great deal but nothing stands out like the cabinets. In this kitchen, the cabinets were 20 years old. The color was dull, the installation wasn’t good and the materials were at poor quality. The homeowner found out the old saying “you get what you pay for” really means. After several days of preparation including the substantial amount of electrical, plumbing, drywall, and flooring work, both the cabinets and the pantry are ready to go in.
Well, we’re now than with the heavy lifting. We’ve moved the junction box and heater upstairs. We ripped out everything that is going away. Now is the fun part. Here, is where we actually see the changes and we got the guy running the job with us, Bill Taylor from DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen.
Hey Bill I know on every remodeling project, there’s something major you have to overcome, what is the big problem with this kitchen?
Bill: The biggest problem with this kitchen was the fact that we were dealing with and extremely narrow space. It’s a long narrow kitchen and we had to maintain room for people to go through the kitchen because it’s also a travel space into the rest of the house.
Mike: Like and look over here with this cabinet, I noticed that you did something that you don’t normally see in the kitchen and explain to us what this is about.
Bill: This is a base cabinet that is been built taller than a normal base cabinet and is an extremely narrow base cabinet. We needed some extra storage space but didn’t have the room for a normal cabinet so we build this. The reason we stopped at this height was because it allowed person’s vision to run over the cabinet giving the appearance of more space than we actually have.
Mike: The cabinets are going in without a hitch but it isn’t by chance. DreamMaker takes a lot of time in the planning process to make sure that the installation is smooth.
Bill: Well the first thing we do is check everything for the level. We’ve got some marks on the wall that we’ve already put on. We’ll come in and put a ledger board on underneath our level marks. That allows us to take our upper cabinets, set them on the ledgers and attach them to the walls and once we’ve got the upper cabinets in place, we can come in and we set our lower cabinets. Again, we’ve checked the floor for level and we’ll set the cabinet’s level shimming them as we need to in that way, the granite tops that are coming will all set flat at and there won’t be any warpage problems.
Mike: Well we had the water heater and the junction box in here. This was a wasted space. So after DreamMaker start pulling stuff out, their sister company, Mr. Router came in and moved the water heater upstairs. Then another sister company, Mr. Electric came and moved the junction box and then hooked up the electric water heater upstairs. Now, we’ve got room where we can actually put in a pantry unit.
To complete this part of this kitchen remodel, the homeowner chose high quality Dakota Granite countertops to complement the cabinets. The granite arrives in 2 pre-cup that will match perfectly, thanks to templates provided by DreamMaker. Installers will work to set, level, and secure this high end counter tops. Unlike the old kitchen, this counter has room for under mount roll sink, making kitchen clean up a piece of cake. A matching granite backsplash is carefully cut and installs. These are much thinner pieces of granite. Unlike the countertops, they are added one at a time just like tiling a floor. After the adhesive dries and the little grout is added, one of the most impressive portions of this kitchen remodeling is complete. The solid wood cabinets and granite countertops for this kitchen cost the homeowner around 10,000 dollars. Remember that kitchen remodeling can run from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand dollars based on the working options that you choose. In the end, it’s worth every penny if your kitchen turns out to be a dream come true.
