Hey, everyone. Welcome to Gardenfork. Today, we are at my friends’ house and he just bought this old house and it has some pretty old wiring in it. So one of the first things we wanted to do with here was, we do not really quite have a budget to replace all the electric in the house but I did suggest that we replace the circuit breakers in there in the circuit breaker panel here. Because I notice when they are turned on a bunch of them buzz and that is usually not a good thing. And some of their connections are quite corroded.
Circuit breakers are really easy to replace. I just want to show you one how to do this. We are going to replace all the circuit breakers in this panel but if you have a problem in your house, it could just be a bad circuit breaker and they are really easy to replace and I am going to show you how to do it.
First of all, you have to be very careful, okay. This is a lot of electricity right in here. And the first thing we need to do, I am going to take the panel off and we are turn the power off to the panel. Okay, I am going to show you how to do that but be careful. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, do not do it. All right? But if you feel comfortable in electricity you have to have been a very, very respect for it, this is easy to do. All right?
So first thing, just take off the panel cover. Do not lose this screws; do not be like Eric. All right, this comes off. And that is your circuit breaker panel. Now, there are wires in there, there are live electricity in there. Before we do anything with this panel we have to turn off the main breaker. So your main breaker is at the top and it has these big wires that are coming in from the electric poll. And it is this breaker here and when we flip this, all the power in the house is going to go out. All right, ready? One, two, three.
What is that? What happened? So we went to the store and bought a bunch of brand new circuit breakers, we went through and made a list, we looked at the old circuit breakers and so we needed there is a different—depending on what is connected to that wire. I mean you know, if it is the hot water heater, it is a 220 volt or 240 volt and if it is just your phone that is usually got 110 volt. Dual circuit breakers, these are a 220 volt and a single breaker is a 110 volt and they are very modular and they are very easy to replace and I will show you how to do this. Really all you need is a screwdriver and some pliers. It is simple.
All right so, our power is off. Still be very careful about the panel because the top still has the power coming into the panel is still live. You can actually some tape over that sealed, excellent to touch that. So again, make sure that your main breaker is turned off and then it is very, very simple, you just turn all these off. So again, your panels turned off, you take your screwdriver and you just work the breaker like that and it comes off like that and there you go.
All right, you see this—all that was they are like corrosion and that is big reason for taking all this and replacing them. So you just take your screwdriver, loosen that connection and the culprit wire that comes right on. So do not lose this wire, pay attention to how many amps ends this breaker was and then you are going to take these circuit breakers to the store and buy replacements. They are very specific to the panel, there is no universal breakers but take this down and match them one per amp. So this one says 20 so, we are going to get a 20 amp breaker, because we have a 20 amp breaker here.
I am going to clean up this wire you will see that it is kind of rusted and then I am going to strip and before you put the breaker back in, you attached the wire to the new breaker. Put the screwdriver in here and loosen this and you take this and put it in here. You take that and that goes in there and you screw this back in. So this is what we put back in. Again, you are going to put in the same place it came out off, what happens is this little hook mark here, looks on right here. The dogs are playing upstairs.
Okay, make sure
