Hi there. Alright, I get a lot of questions about this next topic: The dreaded drop ceiling. In a kitchen it's terrible, and Kristen in Little Rock, Arkansas, she has got one and she wants it gone. She writes in and she asks, "My kitchen definitely need some upgrades but my biggest complaint is the office drop ceiling and huge florescent light. What can I do to spice it up?"
Don't worry, there are lots of options you can do to got to get rid of that drop ceiling. And once you take the drop ceiling down, right then, you really need to think about a lighting plan, because this is the perfect time to run electrical and then you can close the ceiling back up.
I recommend regular dry wall ceiling. It's simple, that's easy, you are going to have the extra height, from there you can decide on the color. Now on most kitchen we just go with the white ceiling, but you can also do a color ceiling, like we did in this particular episode where we brought a blue in, very similar to the blue wall color we use, and that really helped the kitchen feel more cohesive.
If you want to do something even more dramatic, we did a tin ceiling and it really created out super focal point in the room that drew your eyes up in the room, which make the kitchen feel even taller and even larger. If you are not partial to tin maybe a copper ceiling. Now that's super warm feeling, and it really give a rich kind of a character-filled look to the kitchen.
Now, if you have the ceiling hieght Kristen to work with, try some exposed beams on the ceiling. This is a great architectural detail, it really add visual interest. On to lighting, now once you've got your ceiling in place, please, please, please don't put that fluorescent light back up, instead try some refit because they are great source of general light and they don't get into the way of a design. They are very transitional. Think about then adding some character and some tap lighting let's say may be a chandelier or like some pendents right here. Soon as they add to the space, a real decorative feel, you can do throw all of these lights on dimmers and then you can add to the ambient of your space and also save on your electric bill.
So there you are Kristen, drop that drop ceiling and your kitchen will thank you for it. Alright guys, if you have any other questions about your kitchen, send them my way. This is really too much fun. Alright, see you guys next time.
