How to Replace the Pads of a Hayes Caliper Brake

Placing pads in a Hayes mechanical break is same way as with the hydraulic, padded inside. There is still a fair amount of pad material on there. You can see these pads are a little bit chewed, but you can compare it with a new one. They are under hard use in wet conditions. You can wear through a pad in a month easily. In dry conditions, moderate use, you can get easily a year or more.

You never want to come to the place where you are getting really close to the metal. Again, here it wouldn't work, because the catch doesn't line up with the piston. This is an offset thing. There is definitely a right and a left, those are two different pads. So you just look, see, what the catch line is up with. There it is. These are enough thicker that the gap is smaller with this new pad, and you will need two as I showed you. Push the pistons in more with the ten millimeter box end wrench, and it will be spaced through the rodder otherwise.
