Hey guys, it is Chris here again from ClassicVWBugs.com. Your source for your VW restoration tips. Today’s tip that I want to give you is I have an old style 1958 beetle here and I want to talk about the chrome moldings that go around the car on the area bugs basically from 1966 and earlier, you have the stick chrome moldings that go around the car, which I love. For what I have noticed is there is a lot of different after mark products out there. You got these Brazilian, cheaper chrome. I know some guys are tempted to buy these and they also even have the cheaper clips. I have done this when I wanted to go real cheap on some of my bugs when it came to a restoration which some of these things you should not skimp on. And what I mean by that is, the Brazilian or the cheaper chrome to go around the cars as far as the molding goes, I noticed when it came a time, they press the molding on to the car. What happened is your thumbprint just start to imprint on the chrome, because it is cheap.
You can see this one. It is twisty and it is very flimsy and then what I also noticed is this black clips for some reason, do not like to go into the hole very well. They stick and this makes you even want to press harder and then you want to crimp in there at the chrome. I like this chrome sort of clips, they are more money, but it is worth it and it is worthy to get the German molding which is shinier and they set in a lot better. Then you just get the black rubber boots to go around the car to go into those holes. So if you got this older style bugs and you got to stick your chrome moldings, spend a little extra money and get the better clips and get the better chrome moldings because they are going to line up, not looking as good number one and number two when it comes a time to out of your mind that it just got bend and you will get flushed here and then you do not want to go and buy a new set anyway.
So here is a chrome molding that is on the earlier style bugs, nice and thick. What you want to wind up doing is first, you got to be putting this black boots into a series of holes that are through out the door here. And what you do with your pop is sometimes you might need a little bit of silicon to throw in there just to let it sit in a little bit fast depending on how you end up your holes or something. But the way you are going to do is you will again get the chrome molding, and remember, the nicer the clips and all you basically is going to do is slide it into the channel here and that will slide on just like that. If you could see that right here and then what you do is this is a series about four or five clips, they go into the door here and then what I do is I just basically line it up to the door. Line up this because it will slide very easy up and down, it can get annoying after what I start functioning up, so I like them up here with the holes and then you just turn the chrome, put it in, line it up with all the holes and then instead of pressing it in with your thumb, which I said you could bend it if you put so much force on there, again a nice paint stick. You put the paint stick on their and then widen up your hand like that and then press it into the holes. It should snap it with no problem. Like I said, get the German chrome moldings and get the better silver clips. They just got to go in a lot better than those black clips and the cheap Brazilian chrome. It could just have bend and plus again, it is going to look so much nicer when you wait and take it to shows. The sound is going to gleam out a lot better.
And that is our tip for today. Of course at ClassicWVbugs.com if you want to email and ask a question. Alright, take care!
