Hello I am Chris from classicvwbugs.com. I got a short tip for you today and as you can see, I've got my table laid out here with some parts that I'm putting together for this 56 Bug and I hope you can see here in my garage. I will put the accessories on it and what not. I am putting these tall gravel guards on and if everybody who used to use these, these are stainless steel. They are really strong heavy duty gravel guards.
One thing I'd like to do is on the back of the guard, I get some weatherstrip foam. I's sticky on one side and rules out as you can see here. What I do is I put it on the back of the gravel guard. I do this because the edges of these gravel guards are sometimes sharp. I know you can send them down or what not to turn them out but once we get tight up along the fender of the car, they can start to scratch and the paint starts to bunch up and chip. I don't really like to --I like to keep the paint nicely clean and I don't want any chips. So what I do is I buy this weatherstrip material and I' apply it on the backside of the fender guard and what you do is you, kind of, bring it to edge but don't come up too much because you don't want it to surely show while it's on the car. Come out just over the edge, so it clears that and then when it comes time to pull the dent to the car, your paint is protected.
Okay, so here is the final product and as you can see all around the inside parameter of this fender guard and this is going to protect my paint and body. One thing I want to point is you can get this weatherstrip material from a hardware store, or Home Depot/ Lowes, at local hardware store. They should have this stuff, just go over to the weatherstrip section, usually for windows they have this for, but I found this real good. It's spongy. It's got a nice soft surface to it so you know something to think about it in the future for using these tall gravel guards.
Okay, you can see here on my 54, right here on the edge, oh little bit around here, I see a little bit around there stick in out, just a little bit, that's okay, because now when I take these gravel guards off or if somebody wants to take them off later on if they say, sell the part, the paint won't be scratched and it won't be damaged in anyway so and even when it comes down to installing them, sometimes you can slip and scratch the paint over here or something and then you really be pissed off. So put that on beforehand and when it comes time to installing, it's going to protect you your paint and what not. So just a short tip, Chris at www.classicvwbugs.com.
