Hi, this is Chris of VitaminCM.com and today we are going to follow up on our previous episode where we learn how to reuse an old computer as server by learning how to do some interesting and new things with that server.
One of the first things that I want to show you how to do is be able to transfer files back and forth between your primary or desktop computer and this—in order to do this, you need to start out or allowing ‘file sharing’ on the server. So I have windows explorer open here on the server and you could see here is the C drive and some of the different folders that are Onyx.
So, the quickest and the easiest way to do it, if you notice down here, there is a thing called shared documents I will just going to take the C drive click on it and drag it down and drop it on to shared documents. So, now if I clicked unshared documents you will notice it says local disk C, so it shared. That means that other people can get to this drive.
Now, I am going to open up the C drive here, and on the C drive I want to create a new folder, so I will right click and say New Folder and I am going to name this folder back up. Okay, because I am going to be using this to store my back up information from my other computers on the network. So, if I click on the back up folder there is nothing inside of it. All right, so I will minimize that and actually going to minimize the VNC viewer also.
On my primary computer or my desktop computer, what I need to do is open up windows explorer here and I need to map to that drive on the network so that I can use it. If you look here, these are the drives that are on my computer. If I go to Tools, map network drive, it is going to ask me a couple things. So, I am going to give the driver letter, so I will name it S for a server and I need to find the drive that I am looking for so if I click this brows button it goes to my network places and inside to my network places, click Microsoft Windows network, then click on workgroup and in workgroup it will show me the other computers that are in this workgroup that I am on.
So, if you notice this one that says server here and that is the server that we are looking at and what I want to do is click on server itself so that is really the C drive of the server. And I will say okay, and I want to give it and I will say finish.
Now, if I will click folders here in windows explorer, you will see the S drive here is server and there is that back up folders that I just created. And what I want to do is I want to create a folder inside that back up folder that I can store my information into. So I will right click and I will say new folder and I will just call it CHRIS in all capital letters.
Now, I minimize these windows and I want to pull back up the VNC server windows so I can look back at the server here. Now, if I open up the server and remember that folder I created back up, if you look inside in there, there is the folder that I just created.
Now, that we have a drive map between our desktop computer and our server, we are ready to do some other things. So the main thing that I used is back up server for, is for backups and the software that you can use to do backups is a software called sink back. It is free, the software. I have already downloaded it to my desktop. The information will be in the show notes.
So if I open up the zip file, there is a setup EXE file. So I double click that and it is a typical wizard so, I click next, accept the license agreement, click next again, the side where I want to install it, click next again, click next and install. You know it takes couple of seconds to install and finish.
Once you have sink back, installed on your computer you need to create what we called the profiles, the profiles are different sections of your computer that you want backed up. So, in order to do that you can go to profiles and then say new and to create a backup profiles.
So, it just going to ask you a couple of questions to help you setup what you need. So, what type of profile do you want? A backup for copying files to another dire
