How to Rig Slam Baits for Jigging

Now one of the most important things apart from getting a soft plastic on the hook straight is to make sure that you’re going to get the desired action for the water that you’re fishing, now in saltwater using jig head this soft plastic will have plenty of action in that tail and wiggle along and it will swim upright. In this like I’m really just actually jigging and bouncing it off the bottom so one little trick that I often do with a lot of my soft plastics is I get my sharp pair of braid scissors and I actually trim the tail section thinner, which increases the wobbling action when I’m really jigging it around but not doing a lot of retrieving because it’s actually a very, very slow retrieve so you there you just trim that halfway through and now you see how much more wobbly that tail is.

So now I want to do a super slow retrieve on this lure that will probably have the same amount of action as it is designed to have with a heavier head and a faster retrieve so it seems to be working. Let’s see if we can pick up a couple more before the sun goes down.

No, I think I’ll just place this one down here. Get your head away from that rock. There we go now that that’s ready, so they might be getting a little bit more active. Alright now this one is hooked fairly well in the corner of the mouth, what looks like— Lets get that line and slide in right up on the bank. I got some white— again, that small brown soft plastic, a little slam bite just got absolutely whacked and it’s funny and when they take these lures, you actually feel like your sort of stuck in a big lump of weed, almost like you snagged and then you start to get a few head shakes and the fish realizes that something is not quite right and then you start to hang nice and deep but have a look at how thick this fish is across the shoulders, obviously really well fed in there even on the tail section, really fat, not a bit ready. I think we might let this one go right over here.

There it goes. It spits a few bubbles in there and cruises back down into the dirty water.
