Welcome to tinkernut.com video cast.
For the past couple of years, there has been a big debate as to which is better: Linux or Windows.
If you are not familiar with what Linux is, it is an operating system just like Windows except it is free to download and you can download various version of it from the internet. Currently the most popular version of Linux is Ubuntu and it is free to download from ubuntu.org.
So, what we were going to do in this video cast it show you how you can run Ubuntu Linux on Windows as an application. This means that you do not even have to re-start Windows to run it and we are going to do this by using a program called VMware and of course, we are also going to use Ubuntu.
Step one: Download VMWare
Let us get started. The first thing you want to do is download VMware and to do this which you want to do is go to the link listed here and download the VM player. You will have to fill-out a quick little questionnaire except the terms and agreement but other than that, it is free to download. And you just want to download it to your desktop and it is pretty large so it may take a little while.
Step two: Download Ubuntu
And then the next thing you want to do is to download and install Ubuntu which is also a very large file so it will take a little while also. You can just search for in Google to get the page and then you want to select the rigging closes to you and then click start download and just save that to your desktop as well and again it will take a little while.
Step three: Download the OS image file
The third thing you want to do is download the OS image file which will be pretty quick because it is a really small file. And just type in this URL and it is a direct link to the zip file so right when you hit enter after you type it in, you will be able to download it. So save that to your desktop also.
Step four: Install the VM Ware
And now what are we going to do is install VM Ware so just double-click on the icon that you downloaded to your desktop and let the installation load and then click next, next, then install. The defaults are generally fine and then click finish, it is pretty simple.
Step five: Install Ubuntu
And then, what you want to do is to install Ubuntu on VM Ware so extract the OS zip file that we downloaded and drag the ISO image over Ubuntu into that folder and then if you want, you can rename that ISO image to something easier to remember like Ubuntu.ISO and then what you want to do is right click on the .VMX file and choose open with notepad. What you want to do here is where it say IDE1:0 and file name, you want to change that to the Ubuntu image file so just change it to whatever you name it to .ISO. And then also on this page, you can adjust the memory size and things like that but other than that, just close it out and now all you have to do is double-click on the .VMX file and then just click “ok” for that little warning and it should automatically start loading the Ubuntu ISO. And you can just click start Ubuntu, start to install and just wait for it to load. Now, keep in mind that this is not the actual installation, this is just what we call the live CD so if you were to actually close out of it, then you would lose anything that you were working on for the most part.
Hints:
1. Ctrl G, Ctrl Alt will toggle the mouse between the computer and the virtual machine
2. If you have folders shared over the network, you can access then from the Virtual Machine.
3. If you want to save the data on your current Virtual Machine session, then choose “suspend” instead of close or exit.
Just keep that in mind. This is not the actual installation so you cannot actually install things on it. It is just mainly to test out Linux without actually having to install it on a separate partition or anything like that. Well, that is it for this tutorial. For more go to tinkernut.com
