How to Sail with the Nantucket Community Sailing
Female: Tonight we’re going to be taking out the same road 19’s and a couple martial 15 and also going to take out the J/105 which is the big navy blue hull way out to the end of the mooring field out there. I'm happy to take volunteers if anyone would like to try the J/105 tonight, it’s great be a --
Nic Judson: The great thing about the J/105 is they’re big flat ones and it’s nice open seating areas, plenty of room, plenty of space. So when we’re going for the sail and doing different things, it’s really easy to manage that. What we are going to do is literally we’re going to get going as much as we can. It’s always Michael once he gets sailing and I’ll show you how to actually sail.
Janelle Ferri: I’m featuring like Owen Wilson during -- is out on the boat.
Nic Judson: You're going to hear me talk about different things like the bow and the stern. The bow is the front of the boat, the stern is the back of the boat.
So those are general terms that guaranteed you're going to hear them a lot today, you're not going to remember them or know whats going on because the more you sail, the more you’ll pick those things up and the stuff will start to cling.
One thing that we are going to do today is we are going to reef the boat which means we’re going to reduce the sail area on here. Do the reef, I'm going to need everybody’s help.
This is how the sail -- so you can actually take this, bring it around goes up over this metal piece and locks in right here, and that way if I'm sailing the boat by myself I don’t have somebody the tail and the grind, it will actually -- does the work for me. We can actually have to put the main up. So what I'm going to do right now is ease this off nice and free and then I’m going to come back over here. This is the one thing you don’t want to lose, you don’t want to let go of this.
This goes up the mast then we have to hoist it on a different line up the mast to retrieve it.
Female: Is that why you are holding it?
Nic Judson: That’s why I’m holding it like this. But I’m going to pass this to you here so when you let go of that, you're going up the mast.
Female: Don’t do it.
Nic Judson: You're ready to jump the main?
Janelle Ferri: I'm ready to jump the main. So right now I'm going to be jumping the main, pulling out letting it go, pulling it out letting it go. Oh, there you go. I got it but I'm eating my hair. Yes, very nice.
Nic Judson: And I’m going to have you grind it up the rest of the way. Keep your head low, very good. Watch it. That’s terrific.
Janelle Ferri: I love this. This is great.
Nic Judson: --
Janelle Ferri: Yes.
Nic Judson: You’ve been escaping it for a while, now I’m going to put you to work.
Janelle Ferri: I’m going to counseling how to sail and I can’t believe I waited this long to sail. I hope I will be back on the water again.
