Accidents happen. You may have bumped your server of your keyboard, spilled water on your cell phone, or dropped your iPod in the pool. Although liquids and electronics do not tend to mix, a close encounter of the aquatic kind does not automatically equal gadget death. We will show you a few methods you can try to revive and salvage your endangered gear, but remember luck does play a huge role on whether you will be successful. Sometimes, there really is nothing you can do to save your hardware in these cases.
Turn the gadget off if you have not already done so, and remove the battery and media card if the device contains these items. Now your goal is to get your wet gadget as dry as possible as quickly as possible. Use a paper towel to dry any visible moisture. If your keyboard is wet, turn it upside-down to let the liquid drain out. The tricky part is getting out any liquid trapped inside your gear.
You could try several methods in getting the moisture out; heat is often effective. Try keeping your gadgets in the front pocket for the day. You can also try using a hair dryer, set to lower medium heat to dry it off. And you can also try dunking the gadget completely in 99% alcohol, which will bind to the water, and then evaporate. But do be careful, alcohol can damage some plastics.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea, opening up your gadget may be the best way to make sure you have removed all the moisture. And you will definitely need to open it if you spilled something sticky like sert of a coffee onto your gear. It will literally gunk up the works, and prevent your hardware from working properly. Check online for gadgets’ specific instructions on how to take your hardware parts safely. Make sure you use 99% rubbing alcohol to clean the circuits, and do your best to remove any visible dried goo.
If your keyboard is the affected part, you will need to remove all of the individual keys in the section that got hit to make sure nothing remains to trip up the key mechanisms. Once you have tried all these techniques on your gadget, leave it overnight to make sure everything in it has evaporated, and then try turning it on again in the morning. Good luck.
