Hi! I’m David Lupberger with servicemagic.com.
I’m up in an attic today to talk about the value of attic insulation. The Department of Energy estimates that 44% of your energy bill goes to pay for heating and cooling your home.
What you’re looking at on this attic is a blanket. This is blown in insulation. It does two things. In the winter, it keeps your home warmer. In the summer, it keeps your home cooler. What you’re looking at is a layer of insulation and this has to do with R-factor. R-factor means thermal resistance so keeping heat from penetrating your home in summer, keeping the warmth in your home in the winter. The higher the R-factor, the more the thermal resistance, the more insulating it accomplishes. In this case, you’re looking at about eight inches of insulation. This is an R30 which is the minimum required. Honestly, sitting in this attic, I’d probably put two or three more inches in.
Putting an insulation, this kind of blown insulation or roll insulation, there’s a variety of kinds, putting this in is the most energy efficient expenditure you can make towards your home the best investments you can make. If home owners focused on their home in regards to insulating doors, windows, and attics you can save anywhere from 10% to 50% on that energy bill.
Now, this isn’t something a homeowner can really install. So in this case, I would recommend you find a competent service pro to talk to what is the recommended level of insulation, what’s the type of insulation. Have them come out look at your attic because for a several hundred dollars, you can substantially reduce your energy bill.
