How to Save Money in Your Wedding, Part 1
Louise Brady: And our next guest is a credit crunch wedding expert Michael Taylor who promises to bring you wedding in on the five grand. So Michael, how can we do that?
Michael Taylor: Yeah, I would. We spend the withdrawals in couples on improving the relationship with money in order to achieve their financial objectives? Among the most typical objectives that couples want to achieve is actually getting married.
Louise Brady: Of course, it can be very, very expensive but you are the man. You want to keep below five grand. Tell us how we do that.
Michael Taylor: Well, the average number that has been credited is about 17,000 pounds but the way to lunch shouldn’t be right the way down is starting right from the top and before you actually do anything at all, the first thing you have to achieve, people talk about physical intimacy and should you or shouldn’t you before you’re married while I talked about financial intimacy which you should definitely do before you’re married.
And what that means is the pair of you coming together, drawing the curtains, and laying the spreadsheet and putting together financial statement fast. So you can look at how much actually money am I going to have to be able to spend on this wedding to start with. And also, what else can we actually outsource. Is that cheap in a few quite? Is Okay Magazine cheap in a few quite and then we start the process of the biggest cost is of course is the venue.
Now you can launch them a huge amount of cost off by over the weekday wedding and often on a Sunday wedding. And the way the eye always recommends people to approach it particularly on the current climate is to go out to a number of different venues that you particularly like and say we want you a bit for my business.
Volume price, organizations if you have popular one it might be booked upon a Saturday but they will be definitely be willing to do at the end if you’re not getting married on any day of the week.
Louise Brady: That sounds great. Well, what about everything else? What about the cake and the flowers and things like that.
Michael Taylor: Well, I always like to start as a little bit further on. I mean the thing is when we start in this because it’s effectively a very complicated project. You should be open-minded.
Lots of couples come into it and they say I want to like to have a big, glitzy wedding. I want this and I want that but the reality is when they drafted the financial statement fast is that they don’t actually got 20,000 pounds. It’s going like it’s spend on nice day out.
So you can be creative. You kind of like saying settled but I'm not thinking outside of the box. When coming across another big expense which is typically the dress. Now what I tend to not say to couples is go and get castle scrapbook. Get lots of ideas but then start looking around. EBay is a fantastic thrive of places to go and pick up a really cheap wedding dress. Charity shops now, you got charity shops that specialized in doing wedding dresses.
There is nothing wrong with having a second hand wedding dress whether the dress is new or whether it’s second hand, you’re still going to look spectacular on the day anyway.
Louise Brady: I have to say a friend of mine. She has bought a brand new design of wedding dress and has found exact worn, the exact size on eBay. She’s actually devastated. She can't her money back.
Michael Taylor: That’s life and it’s the same with accessories. I mean if you take things like your brides and tiaras and all the bits and pieces you can like pay 60 or 70 pounds for them on like the high street. For a pound I think I’ve seen like a tiara that retailed at 82 quite.
Louise Brady: Is it bad luck to wear a dress someone else’s has worn or supposed you’re saving the money. You might as well.
Michael Taylor: Well then, I tend to find that you feel more special about it if you save more money. If you can like compare that what you could have spent on the wedding and what you’ve got actually got. The difference between the two, at the end of the day you don’t walk up the aisle with price tags on everything and maybe just look inside when one grand it’s not costing them, what stood that costs. They don’t worry about that. That’s why it makes all the more special by putting more effort into it and also by bringing all the people and friends in the fold.
Another example is wedding costs. Wedding costs should be declared by 400 pounds each per day. But think about have you got a remedy for a friend who has got particularly nice car that washing the car with a bit of trim on there. Get it done for free as a favor or if you want concrete. I mean something like a limousine, you can actually get something like an X cross Crusaders from one of the main car rentals for about 120 pounds per day and I mean with a designated driver. You go exactly the same as what you have bought from a wedding couple either.
Louise Brady: That’s great. Also, as part of the show, we have lovely and stationery companies where she run stationeries. But I think you get great sense of pride giving out that on the day or—
Michael Taylor: The same is free on the internet. Google, go in Google. Go to ideas for that wedding template and they will come into any application if you’ve got things like Microsoft stuff on your PC or if you’ve got Mac. They’ve got specific ones. There were specific templates for free that you can go into them. If you go to any major station, you can get all the platforms, fantastic, paper and envelopes. They will not cost you anything.
Louise Brady: Well, Michael. Thank you so much for coming and sharing your top tips with us.
Michael Taylor: Well, thanks. Follow me on and I would just like to say TV viewers at home if they want to get any more information, they can pull down the wedding planners and spreadsheet of the website and also all of that tips that we’ve talked about as well were listed there.
