Better
Rhiannon Ally: We all know that buying in bolt can sometimes save us some cash
but what if you’re single. Jeanette Pavini has some tips for shopping solo
in today’s Better Ways to Save.
Jeanette Pavini: Buying small portions of food and cans and boxes often costs more
but stocking up can lead to waste so what’s a single to do. Follow these
tips and you’ll eat Better and save more. Start with the freezer. Make sure
its not crammed so full that you lose track of what’s stored there. You can
store bread, tortillas, rolls and bagels in the freezer. Thaw for an hour and
use the microwave or toaster. Your bread will stay fresher than if you store
it in the fridge.
Also repackage foods in single serving portions or put in ziplock bags that
you can reseal. You can store single serving portions of pot stickers,
wantons, jumbo shrimp, meatballs and chicken breasts in freezer bags.
Healthy soups can be gussied up with chopped green onions, parmesan
cheese or additional frozen veggies and stop by the Delli counter to buy
exactly the right amount of meat, cheese and pre made salads for one.
Make sure that you store oils marinades and special sauces in the fridge to
maximize their shelf life.
Pasta, rice and beans all have long shelf lives and can be mixed and
matched with things in the freezer. Cooking for one doesn’t have to mean
take out or TV Dinners every night and it doesn’t have to cost more than
cooking for two or more.
