How to Save on Holiday Travel
Male: Thank you.
Female: Hoping to head out of town this holiday season? You are not alone. Demand for flights has risen over six percent this year unfortunately airlines have increased their capacity by less than two percent that is bad news for travelers.
Male: Fewer planes means fewer flights, fewer flights means fewer seats the law of supply and demand kicks in and guess what? The fares are up.
Female: The good news, you can make travel more affordable. For starters if you have to fly over Thanksgiving do not book a flight for Wednesday, the day before the holiday which is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year.
Male: My advice is get up early, early, early on Thanksgiving morning and that is when you fly the very first fly out on that morning, six o’clock, seven o’clock flight.
Female: Not only will you avoid battling crowds you will not be charged what airlines called peak travel day fees, a surcharge that can add twenty to sixty dollars to your ticket price.
If your holiday destination is less than 400 miles away consider taking the bus, you will pay as little as one dollar to 30 dollars each way and thanks to the recent boom in bus services you will find the ride much more comfortable than you may remember.
Male: They have got leather seats now, free wi-fi and in many cases they got attendants with fully stock bars and snack bars.
Female: Finally it may be hard to cash in your frequent flier miles for airfare so try using them to defray your hotel costs. Hotels are anxious to fill their rooms and are making it easier to redeem your miles at their properties. For CBS news I am Jill Schlesinger, CBS Moneywatch.com.
