Jeanette Pavini: All right, there are ways to penny pinch the postman. The first way to save money on postage is to sign up for online banking and bill pay. You save on stamps and you also give identity thieves less opportunity to still personal information from your mailbox. Now you can save up to 30% by using pre-stamped postcards instead of letters. If you're not in a hurry, you can save by using third class mail instead of first class. Certified mail is less expensive than register but still provide protections and finally a fax is cheaper than over night mail if time is of the essence.

Now when you are sending mails first class you pay a higher rate for the first ounce. Extra ounces are less expensive so double check with the clerk about the price after you weigh your mail and if your package needs insurance only buy enough to cover the actual ratio of the item. Postal insurance won’t cover sentimental value. Special delivery is worth the price on nights and weekends. At other times, the mail is handled the same way as first class mail. If you are sending out large amounts of identical mail it’s worth it to explore booked or library rates. You should also check alternatives to the post office when it comes to mailing packages. Other carriers sometimes have more attractive rates.
