Hello, welcome to the Chinese Learn Chinese Lessons. My name is Len and today I would like to teach you one sentence in Chinese and that is “I need a hug.” So I need a hug in Chinese wo xiang bao yi bao. So again, this has been a request on YouTube and I recommend everybody to send me a request on YouTube or you feel on Twitter and send me a request on Twitter as well and I can transform them into such mini lessons for you. So wo xiang bao yi bao. How do you actually right this sentence into a Chinese characters, and this is the way you right it.
Okay, let’s have a look at this sentence wo xiang bao yi bao. So the first character wo means I. The second character is xiang means want and the third to fifth character bao yi bao means hug one hug. So this is a specific rule in Chinese grammar, which you have the number in the middle and then the verb at the beginning and at the end in order to form this phrase for how many actually you want. So bao yi bao, the third character bao means hug and the fourth character yi means one and the last character bao is again hug. So hug one hug as in Chinese grammar, so wo xiang bao yi bao, I need a hug or I want a hug, such a romantic sentence to say.
So let’s have a look at each individual characters. As we can see, the first character is wo, so wo is a left and right structure and let’s have a look at the demonstration for how do you write wo exactly.
[Demonstration]
Okay, so that’s exactly the way of writing this character wo. Let’s have a look at the pinyin so we can see that it is WO. So W means in Chinese pinyin pronounced wo and O in Chinese pinyin pronounced O, so with the third tone, which goes from up to down and then up again for three times long pronunciations, it is wo, wo, wo, in the shorter version: wo, wo, wo.
The second character is xiang, so xiang means think, making me want in this case as well. So you can see that xiang is more likely an up and down structure and you can see that upper beat can be then can put into the left component and the right component. So how do you write xiang exactly, let’s have a look at the demonstrations.
[Demonstration]
Okay, so that’s exactly how do you write these character xiang. If you have to look at the pinyin, it is XIANG, so X pronounced tsi and I pronounced ee, A and G pronounced ang, xiang, xiang. As many French, they struggle for pronouncing Chinese names with the X in the front. It pronounce tsi. So if you have to look at the tone, it is the third tone that is is going from up to down and then up again with the pronunciation, it pronounced xiang, xiang, xiang and in the shorter version, xiang, xiang, xiang, want or thank.
Let’s have a look at the next character that is bao, so bao means hug and you can see there bao is more likely a left and right structure. The right component is again a little bit complicated. The way to write the right component is from up to down so you can have a look at the demonstrations.
[Demonstration]
Okay, so that’s exactly the way you write this character bao. So if you’ll have a look at the pinyin for pronunciation, bao is BAO. So B pronounced bu and AO pronounced ao, bao, bao, bao, bao and with the fourth tone which is like the English pronunciation that is going for up to down, it is bao, bao, bao or in the shorter version bao, bao, bao.
So the last—the next character which would be the last one is yi, so you don’t really need a demonstration for writing this character yi because it’s just one line. Let’s have a look at the pronunciation. So the pronunciation is YI, so Y pronounced ee and I also pronounced ee, so altogether, yi, yi. And for the first tone which is totally flat, that you don’t have to change your tone when you’re pronouncing. It is yi, yi,yi and sometimes if you pronounce this one, following with another character that has the fourth tone like bao, so it is not yi bao it is more likely. You change the tone from the first tone to the second tone that is yi bao. So you can have a look at the whole sentence again which is wo xiang bao yi bao, so you can see that yi has been changed from ee, so follow me for three times of the sentence, wo xiang bao yi bao, wo xiang bao yi bao, wo xiang bao yi bao.
Okay, that’s fantastic! I believe by now you have already mastered this sentence and if you are not sure, make sure that you actually read the notes that are provided in the comment as the first time in YouTube history and you can scroll back to the video again and again to practice a little bit more.
