How to Scratch as a DJ
On behalf of TVlesson.com, my name is Eric Roman otherwise known as DJ Empire.
In this video, I’m going to show you how to do some basic scratching techniques. I’m not the greatest scratch DJ but it’s important to have because it’s the tool in your art—that you can use to bring in new music that you are not familiar with and in playing normally. So, come over here, I’ll show you that scratching is very simple. All it is just taking the record and moving your hand back and forth. That’s all it is, very simple, very easily done. What you incorporate was scratching and cutting is your cross fader which is this thing right here and your sliders. You have to make sure that you are not too loud so you don’t over power the song that you’re playing. So, I like to stay a little lower and readjust the levels I scratch.
So, we’re going to go—there is actually two ways of scratching and there is normal way which DJs have use throughout time which is the left side, it controls the opens up the left player and vise versa with the right side. So, it sounds something like this. Okay, I’m actually backwards so I’m going to go my way which I’m a little more comfortable which is the right side opens up the left player which is like this. So, essentially all scratching is, is your getting the record and doing back and fort movement and then with other hand and you can get a little more fancier, faster and that’s how you scratch. If we go ahead and play a song right here, I’ve chosen this instrumental just to show you what’s scratching would look like and sound like. And essentially that what’s scratching can be and as you practice it you can get better and throw in some more interesting tricks that you learn along the way.
