Do not let your guest seat themselves; this is the opportunity to engineer a good time. Rule number one, cram them in. The smaller the table, the more crusty their conversation is.
Rule number two, separate couples. Couples drive over together and they go home together. Do not let them sit next to each other for a dinner of two. In addition, once separated they are more likely to flirt. Sexual tension always improves the dinner party.
Rule number three, mix and match. To encourage mingling, sit guest with a friend on one side and a stranger on the other and do not invite people that need to be baby sit.
Rule number four, play musical chairs. In between courses, the host should move around the tables sparkling interaction. If you have done everything right, everybody will have a good time but nobody will help with the clean up.
