Hi, this is James from craftmarketer.com with the video series, The Ten Most Asked Questions about Selling Your Crafts and The Ten Questions You Should Be Asking. This is video 15 of the series.
One of the questions we hear a lot is, “Can I sell craft items made from designs that I get from websites, magazines, books or other sources?” In most cases the answer is going to be no unless the source you’re taking the image from is a copyright owner and especially has a notice that says, “Your free to use the design for commercial purposes.” If you don’t see such a notice the image or design cannot be copied for resale. To do so is copyright and print them. That doesn’t mean that you won’t find people making and selling crafts prior to designs, but they are breaking the law and subject to fine and possibly going to jail.
If you have some more questions about Copyright Law, a great website was Self Help Legal Resources for Artist. It’s www.StarvingArtistsLaw.com. That’s artists with the plural artistslaw.com
The question you really should be asking is, “How do I protect my own designs from being pirated?” Watch the next video for the answer.
This is James from craftmarketer.com. See you in the next video.
