Hi! This is Rich Brooks of flyte new media. We’re a web design and internet marketing company and today, we’re going to be taking another look with Google Analytics. We’re going to be taking a look at how to set up goals and track them using google analytics.
Now what are goals? Well, basically every web site has at least one conversion point. One thing you want your site visitors to deal. Maybe it’s clicking on to buy now button in the case of flyte your media; we have a number of that. One thing we want to do is track how many people are filling out our contact form. How many people are signing up for e-mail newsletter, and also how many people are taking a look at our web site and then giving us s a call.
Now, it’s merely impossible for us to accurately track who is giving us a call after visiting our web site but the number who are filling out our contact from or signing up for an e-mail newsletter, much easy to track so let’s take a look at how that’s done. In Google Analytics, you can look at your goals on the left hand column and right here, you can see on the last month, we’ve had 58 people who filled out our contact form and 285 who signed up on our e-mail newsletter.
Now, well that’s interesting that doesn’t tell us a whole lot. We can get a lot more information by looking in some of the reports Google Analytics gives us. In this case, we’re going to go in the traffic sources and we’re going to look at all traffic sources. So this report, all traffic sources is telling us about how everybody who came to our web site last month where they came from. And as you can see, a lot of traffic came from google. The organic searches, a lot of people typed in our URL directly. We got a lot of traffic from the flyte lot from our own business lot. We got traffic from fast company, the blog that are right over there. We got more traffic still from the blog I made today.
So is there any question in any small business owners mind that blogging is helpful to drive qualified needs to your web site? What you can do here is see this tab and click on goal conversion so you click on goal conversion. And now, we’re going to see the conversion right for all of those sites that you have trafficked your web site and we can even sort by the best rate of conversion so we can see that LCH couriers that orgs sent this only one person, but that person both filled out our contact form and also signed up for our e-mail newsletter. There we can see some people who are using gmail. Click on that link and then ended up filling up or filling out our contact page as well and the blogs and different resources also and of course what their conversion rights are.
So how do you set up these goals? Where you’re going to the profile settings for the web site you’re interested in. in this case, flyte.biz and you can see down the page in under conversion goals and funnel that we have two goals that are already set up and two more we can set up.
Let’s just take a look at the one we’ve already set up. This is for the contact landing page. We make sure that the goal is active; the match type is head match. If you have dynamic pages, you might want to take a look for more information on what’s the type match that you’re most interested at. Then you’re going to put in your goal URL, in other words, what web page is somebody going to land on that tells you that the conversion has happen? In our case, after somebody fills out the contact page, they end up at this URL. So I know if somebody rises at this URL, they have converted at our web site. We keep the goal we name in this case contact landing page. I choose not to have this be kind sensitive, and then you can optionally put in a goal value.
Now, where did I come up with this goal value? Well, basically I barely roughly took the number of people who completed our contact form in the last year and took at the look at the new business generated over the last year and just did a little on that.
So it turned out that $650 was with the average of visitor, the average person that filled out our contact form as worth. Now, obviously not everybody is worth $650. Some people who fill out our contact form would help getting money out of Nigeria that obviously is worth a lot more that $650 is worth hundreds of millions but I die grasping.
What you want to do next is define your funnel. Our funnel is very simple. I want to know if people landed on the contact page and then ended up on the contact thank you page. If you have any comer site, you may end up adding in the lot of steps. Pages that people need to visit to complete the process, to complete the sales funnel. This also gives you insight into if people are baling or abandoning their shopping cart where are they abandoning it and then you could fix that problem right there. So then basically scroll down to the bottom line page, click on save changes and you have your new goal.
Now, the thing about Google Analytics is it doesn’t work right to activate. It’s only going to track your goals from the minute you set a map so what are you waiting for? Go set up a Google Analytic Goal right now and start tracking your success tomorrow!
