When you hook up a new iPod to your computer for the first time, iTunes automatically starts up and helps you with the setup. With iTunes open, connect your iPod to the computer with a USB cable. iTunes recognizes your iPod and launches the iPod Setup Assistant. The first page gives you an overview of the process. Letting you know that Apple wants you to register your new iPod and then setup an iTunes Store account. Click Continue to get the process started. A new page appears, displaying the iPod software license agreement. Scroll down to read the entire agreement if you like. You have to accept the terms of the agreement if you want to continue. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck in iTunes Limbo. Check the option labeled, “I have read and agreed to the iPod software license agreement”, and then click Continue.
To setup assistant, we’ll walk you through the registration process. The screen you see might vary depending on where you purchased your iPod. You might see a dialogue for entering your Apple ID. If you bought your iPod directly from Apple and have an Apple ID or MobileMe ID, click the button labeled, “Use my Apple ID to register my iPod”, and then click Continue. Using your Apple ID or MobileMe ID speeds up the registration process. If you bought your iPod elsewhere or you don’t have an Apple ID or MobileMe ID, click the button labeled, “I do not have an Apple ID”, then choose your location from the dropdown menu and finally click Continue.
Apple displays a dialogue for entering your personal information as well as your answers to a few marketing questions. Fill in what you need to fill in, click Submit and you’re done with the first part of the setup.
Next, you see yet another license agreement. This time, you have to agree to the terms and conditions set down by the iTunes Store. Read through the agreement, scrolling a bit if needed. Next, check the box labeled, “I have read and agreed to the iTunes terms and conditions”, and then click Continue. You’re asked to create a new iTunes Store account, which means you’ll have to fill in an email address, setup a password, provide a security question and answer, and confess to how old you are. You also get an option to sign up for marketing emails related to the iTunes Store. When you’re done filling in all the fields, click Continue.
If you have an iTunes Store account, you’ll inevitably start buying media using that account. The new page that appears lets you tell Apple how you plan on paying for all your new media. After filling in all the necessary credit card information, click Submit.
To setup assistant displays a dialogue where you can give your iPod a name and set automatic options. If you want to copy your entire iTunes music library to your iPod, check the option called, Automaitcally sync songs to my iPod. Every time you connect your iPod to your computer, this option copies a mere image of your music library on to the iPod, including all playlist and audio files.
If you have a color display iPod, check the option called, Automatically add photos to this iPod to copy all the photos in your pictures folder to your iPod. Leave the option unchecked if you’d rather transfer photos later. When you’re finished, click Done.
To disconnect your iPod from your computer, click the eject button next to the iPod’s name or click the iPod eject button. Wait for the iPod to show you either the main menu or the “OK to disconnect” message before unhooking your iPod from your computer.
