The nano, okay so you look at all our equipment, you really don’t want to spend that much money, you don’t have a lot of room to put your aquarium. So were going to show you how to set up a nano aquarium. This kit comes with variables in the filter, which I like to remove so it won’t build up any nitrates.
Lets take a minute to talk about variables and filtration systems. If you don’t have live rock in your tank then you need a wet dry filter system, which usually has variables. This is true for any size tank. The wet dry system will then act as the biological filter for your tank. One of the draw backs of the wet dry system is that it builds up nitrates.
To keep nitrates under control as you never get rid of them, you have to be vigilant about your water changes. However, in a fish only tank, nitrates alone do not hurt the fish. Now back to the nano. This is a pre filter with carbon on it, were going to take it and wash it out. Now were installing the pre filter after we wash it. The small amount water in the nano tank does not allow the beginner very much time to check the perimeters. Now were going to add our live sand. Since we have a established things close by. Were going to use hot water, now that we have the sand and the water in the tank, were going to flatten out the gravel.
I like using the same size crash coral in the nano as I do the regular tank about 1/8 of an inch. That just right, know we are going to plug the filter. Here you could see it started up and we can see it is working. Know we are going to install our already cured live rock. As in the big tank, I like to rest the rock on the sand. In a nano there is not as much room to stock rock some top of each other. Waters crowdie now but will settle down. Then we just add some small corals. These happen to be small bubble tip of anomie. The saw of coral, which is known as toadstool.
I could take this two out of the water for a second, as they don’t have as much tissue that would tear with weight of the water. All right, we are going to add a frog swan coral, which is a hard coral. Long powered and we don’t really want to take it all we had under the water because of it's how delicate it is. So were going to slip it with a container fist so that it stays on the water. You can see that the polyps will close down because we did move it. The problem is, when it is not closed all the way and it's out of water and that will rip the tissue.
Know we have the coral back to our nano tank and we are going to put it in. Were keeping on the water so we don’t rip any of it's tissues of the coral. Be selective when choosing your corals for your nano. Take it in to account size and lighting requirements. Make sure you know which coral you can take out of water for a second and which one you can’t. If your not sure air on the side of caution and treat, the coral like has delicate tissue. This nano we will have to select corals that would do well in lower lighting. I like to start out with just a few corals in a new nano to see which takes and which does not. This is the front part arranging your corals in a way that you liked them.
This tank comes with two eighteen wired powered compact bulbs. So we have to look at the balance. There we go, now were going to take and plug them in to our power strip. You can see here we have two little moon lights, for our night lighting. Close the door down and turn on the lights. This is only an eight-gallon tank. You can set up a 10, 15 gallon or 20-gallon long tank. You do have much better choices with that; you could put a hang on filter on it. A protein skimmer and you can even use metal haloids lighting if you like. If you do go with metal haloid lighting for your nano tank, you will have to watch your temperature because they will throw of a lot hit.
Here is our first shrimp, a little personality in it. For stacking your nano tank, you want to keep in to a minimum. About 1 inch per gallon that will be your maximum. The great thing about the nano tank is you don’t need much water. You could buy a premix salt water or sea water it self. You don’t have to worry about R.O.D.I unit and top of all you could just use purified drinking water. This nano does not come with a heater but you really don’t need one because of the lights that are on. It will keep the water warm enough for you. If you don’t have access to cured rock, then you have to get uncured rock and run the tank to recycle it self.
The water perimeters that will have to look out for on a big tank you would have to look out for on your nano tank such as ammonia, nitrate and pH.
