It is funny how stuff works. Yesterday, just out of the blue, I decided that I was going to make a bread. It has been years since I made my bread. It is so much easier to buy it. But, I decided I was going to make my own and sure enough I got the 11 cups of flower the use and everything I needed to make bread. In the end, I ended with four little breads, and not just one, but men they are delicious.
So today, when I decided to look forward for block the future for our block in the week, I was looking for something interesting to do. And guess what I discovered? I discovered that November 17 is home made bread day. Who will guess that? So I was looking for full block patter that might go with some bread. And sure enough, I found this one called bread basket.
Now this particular pattern is missing the handle that goes on it, but I will show you how to sew that on and how to make it because it may not come with your pattern. And this block is going to present a couple few challenges because what I have done is drawn it so that I can make a few sims as possible, which make the sewing a little more interesting, but it is going to make the block with lot better.
This is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.com and I am ready to get started. So let us go. The pieces on the block are all cut out and you could tell you get some interesting shape pieces here. We have got some extended diamond shapes and some triangles which are pretty normal and then a square and we have got rectangles and some bigger triangles. What I am going to do is put this sonar section together so that I can attach this triangle and this triangle last.
So the first thing I am going to do, I will take the easy way out and so these two pieces together. My objects always to change sew, so I am going to go ahead and do that. I am going to attach these two and then these two. Change sew those together and then I am going to attach these two also.
Now these pairs are sewn together. So the next step is to sew this to this and then I am going to attach this triangle on the side there. We are getting very close. So the next step is to sew these together and then attach the bottom to the patch. Now, we are ready to finalize the center part of this basket. So all I need to do is sew these two sections together and then we would be ready to attach the bigger triangles.
Now we have the whole centerpiece of our basket sewn together, so we are just left with attaching the bottom and the top and I am just going to start with the bottom for lot of bit. I guess there are so many bias pieces here. There is a tendency to get these pieces stretch out of shape and you can see this one is a little bit waving, so it might have already got a little stretch.
One of the things to do to make sure this match up is take your bottom triangle here, figure out where the center is by folding it in a half, putting a pin here and then matching it with the center of this basket piece which I know is going to be where all of these come together. So I am just going to line that up and pin it and then ease the sizes in so that the size much with the tips of the triangles and then I will be ready to sew it together. The bottom of the basket here is finished and because we want to have this handle coming up here, I think what I am going to do is make the handle and then attach it so that it can be sewn into the sims of basket when I saw the basket part of the triangle.
So before I sew that together then I am going to show how to make this, the handle. I have got the block here, the bottom part that is done and the top part. And now, I have decided that I want to make my basket handle about an inch wide. Mostly because I have 1 inch wide bias tape measure and I think that would part of the—a nice size basket and handle.
So the first thing I need to do is figure out how long to strip on name and the easiest way for me to figure that out is just to take a tape measure, you kind of lay it out on top here and I rather have something that is too abate and too little, so I am just going to lay it here and measure it. This ends up in about 8-1/2 inches. So I am probably we are going to make a piece of bias tape that is like 9-1/2 inches just for the—I am just going to pin this about an inch away from this side. Now pin an inch away from the other side and then I am going to take it over to my sewing machine and I am just going to do a real straight stitch around both sides to attach that.
Once I started sewing the handle on, I realize that this has a sim down here already, so there is already row stitching. And I decided that putting two rows of stitching on this, on the inside and the outside was going to be kind of ridiculous.
So, I added some dimension by making just one stitching line in the center and then this handle kind of sticks out.
So the next thing I need to do is just attach this and again I am going to find the center of this. Put a pin in it, match it up and once I have attach this, I am going trim this small pieces off. And now this block is finish. This is an 8 inch little basket block and I am going to take over to my iron board and iron it so that it is all nice and flat.
So our print basket block is all complete and you can see this is a block that you can either put on point or you can set it in to quilt on side ways and it is going to cross side ways, either that way or that way. In any case, it looks like all line is my lover bread, maybe a glass of wine, some cheese.
So enjoy making this block and if you are not already there, held on over to www.quiltblocklibrary.com and get your free downloaded this pattern and browse around. See week a hundreds of patterns. This is Penny Halgren wishing you peaceful piecing.
