Not all quilt blocks look like what they actually are. That is with their name is. But this quilt block called “airplane” actually looks like an airplane. This would be a fun quilt to make for a child or someone involved in the airline industry or someone with a private pilot’s license.
Hi! This is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.com and QuiltBlockLibrary.tv. Thanks for joining me.
I've got all the pieces cut out. So, let’s go over to the sewing machine so you can see how to sew this one together.
This is a closer up picture of the block. And I've got all my pieces laid out here on my little flannel board. So, the first thing I'm going to do is sew these units together. These are flying geese and pretty simple, I'm just going to fold the triangles. Match up the sides and then stitch them together. And I've got half of this sewn. So, I'm just going to fold over the second triangle and finish up these two little blocks or two little patches up there.
Now, I've finished this little unit by sewing these two together. And that will create a square that I can just add onto that roll of squares. Then, I'm going to take a look at the bottom here. And the first thing I'm going to do is sew this little triangle onto the top here so that I can get a bigger triangle and add these two pieces.
Now, I got this complete triangle made. And I’ll just go ahead and trim these little tips off. And then sew one side on and then I’ll be ready to add the second side. Now, I’ve got this side on, and we’ll just go ahead and add the second side.
Now, I'm going to do these three pieces. So, I’ll just take this side, this weird shape and add it to the center triangle. Now, we’ve got these two sewn together. We will add these third one and I will be ready to start sewing other things together.
Now, what I'm going to do is, I've got—these can be sewn together as a column. These also—and so I'm going to sew these three together in the center here so that I've got everything in this center thing lined up and it's all kind of the same size. So, I've got these two sewn together and I’ll just add this third square on.
Now, we’ll go ahead and sew this big wing unit onto the center. Now, we can start sewing these together.
So, the first thing I'm going to do is take this column of patches and sew it onto the center column. And I'm going to chain sew these together and leave them hooked together. Now, you can see I've got these sewn together across and they’re still attached. So, I’ll just go ahead and add these patches onto the other side. And again, I'm going to leave this connected. Just two more seams and this block is finished.
So, I’ll just take the top row and fold it down to the center section and stitch through the center. Just one last seam on the bottom here and this block is all finished. Our airplane block is all finished and ready for a quilt. You can see how this is kind of a bright and colorful one even using just three different colors.
