I love space. As a matter of fact when I was a kid, I had an airplane ticket to go to the moon. They were handed out by TWA. I don’t remember what the occasion was but I remember having it and I don’t even know what happened to it. It would be pretty cool to have it today. Obviously, it probably wouldn’t get me to the moon, but what the heck. It would be fun to have it on my wall.
Hi! This is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.Com and QuiltBlockLibrary.Tv. And because I love space, I was pretty excited to run across this pattern called rocket ship. It’s a quilt block pattern and it’s very old, and I’ve modified some of the colors in the block itself so that it looks more like a current rocket ship. I’m ready to get started on this block and my fabrics are all cut out. So we’ll meet you at the sewing machine.
Just as a matter of interest, I included the original design for this quilt block pattern here, and you can see, it’s got these two little wings coming out. And I don’t know, it just kind of looks like a flower to me but in kind of blues instead of any other colors. So I changed some of the colors and created something that I thought looked more like a little rocket ship. And I guess I could have made that great, but anyway, it’s got two little orange flames coming out of the bottom. So I’ve got my pieces cut out here and I’m ready to sew them together.
The first thing that I’m going to do is combine these pieces to make this square and then I’ll start adding the rest of the pieces together. To begin, I’m just going to take these triangles and sew them together and then I’ll add this triangle on to that side so that I have this piece done. I got these three corner triangles sewn together and I’m just going to add this piece to the bottom. It’s pretty easy to sew, but because I got my seam allowances pointing in, I want to be sure to keep them pointing in the same direction.
Now as I look at this block, I’m going to have to take any consideration that I’ve got these rectangles and try to figure out what’s going to be the best way to sew these together. So what I’m going to do is sew these two squares together and add them to this block or to this patch, it’s block sized but it’s really a patch. And then I’m going to take these three, sew them together and add them onto there. So the first step is to sew these two patches together.
Now that I’ve got these two sewn, I’ll go ahead and sew these two patches together. Now that I’ve got these units sewn together this way, I can actually change all these together. So I’ll flip this on top of there and sew these together and then I’ll sew these together and then I can finish this unit. Now that I have these pieces sewn together, I’m just going to flip this up and sew these together and then I’ll have this entire piece put together.
Now with this corner piece done, what I’m going to do is sew these two together and add it onto the bottom and then I’m going to sew these two together just as a first step. Now, I’m ready to add this bottom piece so I’ll do that, and then I can add this one on the bottom and change stitch that across. I’ve got all of these sewn together and I’ve got these little pieces chain stitched onto here and so I just need to fold this over and sew this last section on and the block will be finished.
This rocket ship quilt block is all finished and this is pretty fun. It’s got the flames coming out the bottom and it’s blasting off into the sky. This is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.Com and QuiltBlockLibrary.Tv. Thanks for joining me. And if you’re not already over there, head on over to QuiltBlockLibrary.Com and pick up your free download of this quilt block pattern. Thanks again and peaceful piecing.
