What is the most useful piece of project management advice you have ever received? You cannot manage a project on your own. Never assume… Seek to understand before you seek to be understood. Delegate and remember that there is more than one way to complete the same task. Allow the team to take responsibility for the tasks assigned to them. Never assume that something is happening – check!
Manage the sponsor, do not let them manage you! If you come in to a shocking e-mail, draft your reply right away but do not send. As the day progresses you may receive information which changes what you want to say. Revise fully before pressing the ‘send’ button!
Never take anything for granted. Make it good, not perfect. You OWN the project. If something goes wrong, whilst the buck stops with you, do not take it personally – everything is resolvable, it just may take time to find that solution. Keep the End in Mind: focus on LPI, submission, etc…
Look at the whole picture and be realistic with the expectations. Taking a decision and moving forward is always preferable to indecision and delays. It is not life or death. Have a big glass of wine ready at end of the day! Do not take it personally.
