Welcome to Tinkernut.com’s video cast. In this video, what I am going to do is I going to show you is a cool trick that you going to do with your text phone. We are going to learn how to shutdown a computer just by sending a text message from our cell phone.
What we will need to do from this project is we will need and Outlook account and Email account to go with that. We need a “kwiry” account and we also need a texting capable cell phone.
All right so let us get started. The first thing that we going to do is
Create a folder called shutdown.bat. So to do this open up notepad and type in what you see below and what this does is it points to the shutdown application and the dash S means to shutdown. Dash F means to it and dash T is to set the timer to zero seconds and just save this file anywhere, I am going put it into my C drive but make sure to save it as shutdown.bat that is very important.
The second step we want to do is we want to get an email account that is POP3 capable. If you do not have one or you do not know you can sign up for free Gmail account. This is what I did for this project.
The Third thing we want to do is to set up Microsoft Outlook for POP3 account. So go to tools, email accounts and add a POP3 account and then just type in your information for mine I have just created one called tinkernut@gmail.com and the pop server is pop.gmail.com. SMTP server is SMTPgmail.com. Make sure you set outgoing server to enable it and for the incoming POP3 server type in 995 and then check those at the boxes below that and then click okay and that is pretty much it for that.
The fourth thing we want to do is want to sign up for a kwiry account. So go to www.kwiry.com and what this program is? It allows you to send a text messages with something in it and it will email it to your email account. It is pretty cool because we can send a text and it will send us an email that we send in the text. So just sign up for that account and we will move on to the fifth step, which is to set up a rule in Outlook. Before we do that, what we want to do is we want to set our send and receive settings so that it updates and it checks for new messages every minute. If you want it to wait longer you can by just putting the purpose of this demonstration will set up into a minute. So then go tools, rules and alerts and create a new rule or you want to create a blank rule and you want to check the messages when they arrive and then if you want to search for a specific subject word or word in the subject line. And this going to be your space kwiry space-space shutdown and this is what is going to be in the subject whenever you receive the email.
This is what is going to say. All right, and then what we wanted to do one’s it finds an email that has a subject line we want it to start an application and the application we wanted to start it will changes to all files. but the application that we wanted to start is the shutdown.bat file that we have made. All right, so then click next and click finish and then you can click apply and okay and that is pretty much it.
The next thing that you want to do is the sixth step is you want it to send a text message. Just send it to 59479, which is your kwiry account, and then in the body put shutdown and then send it and then I can spread this up for the purposes of not making this tutorial too long but generally you will have to wait for a minute. And then whenever outlet receives the email it is going to start the shutdown.bat file and then its going to shutdown your computer.
