Cassy Base: Today on club house gas, friend of the show Crissy Rapp's here and talk about slap hitting in soft ball, so that I have no idea about, so we just turned the show over here, which from the garments people seem to like when I am gone, so I am gone and yesterday on clubhouse gas.
Crissy Rapp: And the main goals of a slap hitter will be A to get on B's and B to put pressure on the defense. Slap hitting is become a more and more popular, and coaches have realize threat if you got a speedy kit and they can make contacts from the other side that they can be a big threat and advantage for scoring runs because they tend to get on base. The ideal candidate that you will want to look for a somebody who is a very fast and has good hand eye coordination and may be as powerful from the right side and you can switch him over and I am get them working on the fundamentals of slapping. The earlier the better if they are 8,9,10 and you want to get working on it, go forward and then I feel more comfortable with it and then really get the foot work down.
And the first thing to, actually the main thing is just the foot work for slapping, obviously your hands are going to be switched, right hand on the bottom left hand on the top, first step, and I have seen this done couple of different ways, I go over two different styles that I have seen, I have seen them both be very effective and its pretty much worth the athletics is the most comfortable with, as long as their upper body is still making good contact. You know turnings so they can make good contact with the ball.
First step is going to be back with your front foot and then you are taking a cross over step as you coming towards to make contact. So its going to open the hips and shoulders are going to stay square and then as you make contact the right foot is actually going to be slightly off the ground as you make contact in go through. So you want that cross over step with your backward to be pretty close to the front of the box as you are coming through that's one thing you want to watch. The front foot can't be out of the box because then you would be making contact out front, outside of the box which is not allowed, so we are going to go back come through and make contact.
So if you see this with the ball, I am here, I am set, coming back and driving it off. One more with this same footwork, taking the right foot back, cross over step and driving it off. Ideally they would want to drive this towards this sure stop because this tensed to be the deepest player on the field and I give them the most time, at the same time you have a kid, you can drive it into the out field this way which is fine as well and so just depends on the situation. And I'll go over one more style of foot work here, the other one that I have seen, and this tensed to be for kids, you are just used if they hitting from the right side, they are obviously starting with their left foot, so just let's them pick that foot up and then the other steps of the same. So now your first step is your left foot, stepping back but thus the only thing moving then you're still coming back across and driving and then you are already taking off to first place and you got an extra couple of steps to get down to back. Once you have that done the other main thing to watch for in his kind of common error, is that when the batter is coming through they are anxious to get down to first place and you might see them open up and kind of take the power away. So you want to make sure, that they really stay focused here on contact, so showed us the still square to the ball, so then as they drive it off, then they can cannot take off the, you don't want them to taking off before they may contact, so you don't want them to bailing because they are not going to be able to, hey hit on out side strike, and then it also keeps here, it take sure head off of the ball and just makes it harder to make solid contact. So when addition to the footwork, we want to stay right on the bottoms make good contact, and then take off. So keep them from, from bailing of with their foot too far.
So I'm actually going towards the pitch and not first base. I'm coming right after the front on the box and making good contact. And this also help to see if it's a ball because if I am coming here and I don't like it, I am pulling back, so its not an automatic, its still has to be strike, coming through I don't like it, and I am just going to continue the foot work just without the swing. So I am not going to attack the ball.
