How to Snowkite with Ramona Bruland
Ramona Bruland: Okay. This afternoon I'm heading about a 20 minute drive outside of Telluride after Lizard Head Pass.
Now we’re about 10,500 feet and you'll often see snow mobiles and ski tourist out here Nordic skiing, snowshoeing. But many more recently, you’ve seen people out here snowkiting.
It’s a pretty new sport and Lizard Head Pass is a great place for beginners to come and learn. I'm going to catch up with Mark Worth. He’s got a new snowkiting school down here in South Western Colorado and Lizard Head Pass is a great big flat area perfect for beginners.
Mark Worth: I'm Mark Worth and I'm the owner of Telluride Snowkite School. I've been kite skiing up here for a decade but it got to the point where there people up here that came up and said they're being all alone there will be a couple of people and sometimes school party keep them up here.
And a lot of them were beginners, who didn’t have really good skills and they were having hard time learning. And I started kind of coaching people a little bit on the side and giving them suggestions to help them have a better day and it’s just was natural to turn it into a school as the demand increases.
Ramona Bruland: Well what’s the learning kind of way for a beginner, who’s never been snowkiting before?
Mark Worth: Well people that have some sailing experience can normally Snowkite in the first day at the end of the first lesson they're moving with some control and usually they're going down wind a little bit but they can hold they're ground pretty well by the end of the lesson.
Ramona Bruland: Now I've got my snowboard out today because I've seen the video and kite boarding was pretty cool, but is there's a difference between anything on skiis or snow boarding on your on your telluride skies today. Is there a preference for a difference?
Mark Worth: Well I find that most people who are skiers and even if there are just maybe a better snowboarder than a skier, I mean just an intermediate skier and an expert snowboarder. Skies are little easier at the beginning because you can move around it’s easier to stand up and it keeps you from falling over because you can just pick one foot up and put it out. So you don’t fall over.
Ramona Bruland: I mean you think you're in for allegedly off tonight well don’t be fooled there is definitely some skill involved here all right. Prior to maybe learning how to scuba dive or play tennis or golf.
You know their skill, you need to work and kind of learn kite keep it in the air get a consistent pull against you. So you can start traveling across these lands.
Your skis, your snowboard, your telluride skis, any that you use so come on up, grab yourself a Snowkite and get yourself a lesson for professional to keep it safe and then maybe try the sport of snowkiting this afternoon. Why not?
