Hello, my name is Luis Anthony Ast the Video Math Tutor, and welcome to the Algebra Lesson Solving Linear Equations Part 2 Application. Now before we get started I highly recommend you to take the time to go over a few lessons, these include Basic Math lesson number 6 Fractions. Basic Math lesson number 7 Units Measurement over the Algebra lesson, Formulas for Geometry and of course you should go over part 1 of this lessons and with that said let’s get started.
A formula is an equation consisting of two or more variables that describe some rule. Solving for a variables consist of using mathematical properties of equality to isolate get by itself the variable ask for on one side of the equation and all other variables in consents are on the other side of the equation.
Example number 1, solve the formula A=2L+2W for the W, the first step you must go ahead and rewrite these formula over and I want to get W by itself the first step is to move 2L to the other side, how? It must have been added so we can do opposite operation we subtract, just cancel and left with A-2L=2W. It’s always by itself not quite so the next step is to remove the 2, how? Well, it’s being multiplied so we divide both sides that too.
And I’m left with A-2L/2=W and that’s the answer. Now traditionally the variables by itself and isolated should be on the left hand side. Well, it’s okay typing about it but let’s move it to left hand side so just reflect everything so we’re left with, there’s your answer.
When manipulating formulas often times is more than one way of getting the correct answer. Try making the answer as compact is simplified as possible. Now if you have a multiple choice type of a test question you may get a solution that is not available to you look at the answers, ABCD and you don’t see a match so what happens you select none of the above and that might be a mistake so be careful.
Here’s the hot tip if you get answer from the multiple choice test that’s in fraction form and you don’t see this as one of your options try changing all the signs of your different term so positive term to negative and positive so some like this for example will look like this. Now I doubt you’ll have this one as a possible solution since traditionally we don’t have negative in the problem so I can move this negative up front that’s allowed and I can make the top part a little more compact so if you switch places I don’t need plus sign so that it looks a little more simplified and possibly this is the one of the options ABCD on your test. Of course, if you still don’t see any the more options then go into the book.
Well I hope you like this free preview of this lesson, see the rest. Please visit my Website to order the DVD or you can download the video on demand, the complete lesson includes many more examples workout in meticulous detail on board plus there’s a special quiz at the end of the lesson. That’s it this is Luis Anthony Ast, saying, keep studying, bye-bye.
