Shane Tallant: Here we are in beautiful Springdale, Maryland at Deborah Harper's house. Now this house has been on the market for a year, don't know why. From the outside, it looks pretty nice. So let's go inside, meet her, and find out why it's not selling. Our real estate expert Shirley Mattam-Male is here. She has a tendency to be tough, but just keep in mind, she is an expert, and she's here to help.
Shirley Mattam-Male: That fan needs to go.
Shane Tallant: So you're not a big fan of it.
Deborah Harper: I thought it's a nice fan.
Shirley Mattam-Male: Look this room has so much potential. We have a miniature vaulted ceiling, architectural detail such as this really needs to be highlighted to buyers walking in here. They need to get that and they need to fall in love with this idea.
Taniya Nayak: The one thing that I see when I walk into this space is ceiling fan. I want the whole room to catch my eye. I want this beautiful wall here to really draw my attention. And I have a great way of changing up the ceiling fan, without actually changing out the ceiling fan. I'm not a huge fan of this huge fan. I'm going to simply change out the blades for a sleeker, slim look, and all for under $15. By slenderizing the blades, we're drawing attention where it needs to be on the wall, and not on this fan. There you go. Fantastic!
I have a surprise for your living room. It's a plasma TV.
Deborah Harper: Ooh!
Taniya Nayak: Okay, I'm just kidding, it's really light.
Deborah Harper: I'm surprised. Oh!
Taniya Nayak: It's a big plasma TV.
Deborah Harper: Oh!
Taniya Nayak: It's going to give buyers a clear image of what this space can be used for, and it only costs $100, you can order it online from a prop company.
Shane Tallant: Taniya has got a stained wood panel plan for the living room.
Male Speaker: This is a beautiful plywood. It's going to get stained a lovely espresso color.
Male Speaker: We catch it with the upside down facing up, your don't get any springs on the nice face.
Male Speaker: Okay.
Male Speaker: Very important, because this is going to look like a cabinet by the time we are done. Let's get it stained. This is going to hold our floating panel, and we are ready to install our floating panel.
Male Speaker: Let's do it, yeah.
Taniya Nayak: Wow! This wall is looking good.
Male Speaker: It does, doesn't it?
Taniya Nayak: I have the final piece.
Male Speaker: Cherry on the cake, the crowning moment.
Taniya Nayak: Let's put up the shelves, I want a plate on either side of plasma. That will give it a little bit of balance with all this cool lines that are coming up between the board. Yes, let's put it up.
Before, you had bland walls and scale issues in here. Furniture wasn't fitting, the celling fan was too big, the wall was oversize, the TV was too small. Now we've got a prop TV to really create a vision for buyers to let them know what they can use the space for.
We just added some boards on that one big wall to really add some richness, some texture, some pop, some drama, all of my favorite adjectives are right there on that wall.
Deborah Harper: I like it, I really like it.
