Today’s inbox question, we have Al from New Orleans. He must be watching the show over the internet. Al asks us, “I use Microsoft Outlook and I still get spam. I thought this was supposed to take care of it.” Well Al, the answer is yes. Microsoft Outlook does have a built-in spam program. As a matter of fact I’ve got my screen up behind me here and if you see there’s a little junk mail program.
Most people using newer versions of Microsoft outlook will have this folder inside of their computer. The idea is that Microsoft Outlook has a certain filter that’s built-in to it and it’s pretty good for the most part but you will find that in many cases you still get a lot of stuff that is spammed coming to your inbox and you literally have to marked it as spam or marked it or go into a junk mail. Make sure you don’t have any real messages inside of there.
But I did want to point out a program that I came across that I really like. It’s called IHateSpam and I’ll show you the website here for a second. The thing I liked about this program Al is that it actually integrates with Microsoft Outlook and it has a cost of about $20.00 a month. You can try it out for free but once installed you can see that I have up here on the screen is spam, not spam, my rating and total fishing blocked by the community. I’ll talk about that in a second but it integrates into Microsoft Outlook to take that filtering up a couple notches.
In fact every time that you get an e-mail and you see it is spammed but it didn’t get caught by the junk mail, you actually marked it as saying “Hey this is spam”. The cool thing about this program is that it actually takes in to a whole social networking. What it does is it passes that information on to a community and you actually get rated for your ability to catch stuff that spam and also your ability to catch stuff that shouldn’t have been spammed in the first.
As a matter of fact I’ll go in to our little rating here. I’ll punch it up on the screen. You can see that our rating says that right now we have achieved a normal level of trust. The idea is that over time as we get better at marking stuff as spam, we’re going to become a more trusted source and the cool thing is that because this information is being shared amongst all the users of IHateSpam, it means that that filter that against spam and fishing is getting better and better and therefore you’ll get less spam as you go.
And one other cool thing, you can see that spam automatically stopped today over three million messages. That’s the community working together to make sure that that filter is the perfect filter to make sure that you’re not getting lots of spam. Again, if anybody has a question about anything about computers or technology, mail us at Inbox@GetConnectedTVshow.com and hopefully we can find that answer for you.
