Hey! Welcome to guitarlessons.com I’m Nate Savage. In this lesson, we’re going to learn a basic metal strumming pattern that if you want to get into metal, it’s really important that you know how to do stuff like this. You’ll notice a couple of things in my left hand, is not doing a whole lot. It’s just holding down some basic power chords and the other thing you want to notice was my right hand, this going forward. This is a really fast rhythm. I’m doing a lot of palm reading too. So, let me show you what chord I was doing real quick if you didn’t catch it and then we’ll get into the strumming pattern on the right hand.
Basically, I’m using the E-5 power chord then I was moving to a B power chord, next finger on the 7th fret, and then going down to an A-flat power chord, index finger on the 4th fret, 6th string. And I’ll show you the pattern now; I’m breaking down for you really slowly so you can get a good idea on what’s going on here. So you got to start of by distending that power chord, then you’re going to hit this E-flat right here four times with a palm mute. So the whole thing together is—and you can do that whole or phrase twice. Once you play that twice, you’re going to hit your power chord one more time and then instead of four times, you’re just going to hit your E-flat note twice. So that entire phrase is right here. You’re going to move to your next chord, your B to the same as exact thing move down to you’re A flat, then go back up to your E flat.
Now stuff like this is really important to get really sharp and crisp, slowly before you start speeding it up. And another thing you want to make sure you’re doing is you’re not muting it too much or not muting enough so, once you’re doing all like that you want a good nice chunky sound just like that. So experiment with far forward or how back you have your right hand on your muting.
