How to Style Curly and Wavy Hair

ScissorBoy: Hey guys! This is ScissorBoy. We're down here in Los Angles today. We're filming at Zerran International. We have Amy here today to join us to help do some of the filming. Amy E: Hi everybody! We're here, and we are going to go investigate natural hair straightening products and the techniques that go along with it. ScissorBoy: Alright. Well, let's head on in. Amy E: Let's go. ScissorBoy: Get some straight hair. Amy E: I'm here interviewing Debbie Rees with Zerran International. What is your position in the company? Debbie Rees: I'm the Educational Director for Zerran. That means that not only am I a stylist but I'm also an Educational Director which means I work with different stylists throughout the United States and I teach them how to use our products and how to work with them. Amy E: And we're talking about their product Reform. Debbie Rees: Reform is a natural hair straightening system without the use of a caustic chemical or a harsh chemical. Amy E: Now, I know that when I go to like a Vegan shopping and I am eating food, sometimes it's more expensive. Is this product really pricey or how much is it? Debbie Rees: They average rate for a straightening system runs approximately about $120 hour. If you have somebody with hair, for example, of my length, you're looking at about two-and-half hours. But if you're looking at a client that has hair down below the back, you could investing anywhere between three to five hours in the system. Amy E: Oh Wow! I'm quite glad I don't have too much hair. Debbie Rees: Yeah, me too. Amy E: If their hair is really brittle and they come to and they say what should I do? What would you say? What would you tell them? Debbie Rees: You can actually use one of the steps which is a hair redemption, you can retail that product to your clients to take home and they can prepare their hair at home for you for the next couple of weeks. Amy E: I want to go see hands-on how this product works? Let's go. Debbie Rees: Let's do it. The Initiate shampoo is PH 7.5 so it's our strongest clarifying shampoo that we have available here at Zerran. It's really important that we clarify her hair. What you're smelling are essentials of peppermint. Amy E: Yeah, you're right. It is minty, it smells like Christmas. Debbie Rees: Your next step which is the hair redemption, the hair redemption is a sophisticated protein treatment, the low molecular weight proteins means that they penetrate right into hair shaft. And Kim's is going to apply a pack hat. We recommend 15-20 minutes. We really want to work that through her hair. Prep, that's part of the Reform system to prepare the hair for the system. A liberal amount is fine, and we're just going to run up through the hair. It's going to make the hair manageable for the stylist as well as giving her another dose of good proteins. While the hair is wet, it's going to be a leave-in and now Kim is going to dry Prep into the hair 100%. Now, we're going to go ahead and move to the most important stuff in Reform which is the Activator. So Activator Kim is actually going to brush this on to the hair. Amy E: May I try? Debbie Rees: Absolutely. Amy E: So you put like a Prep rub like so much and it's dry right now, right? Oh! Yeah it's totally dry. So you just put it on like that? Debbie Rees: Absolutely. Amy E: All the way to the root. Debbie Rees: Yes. We don't want to compromise the Activator at all. It needs to be really, really saturated. Amy E: Oh yeah. Si the more the better. Debbie Rees: After the five minutes as long as the product is damp, you're safe. If it's been 15-20 minutes and the product is still damp you are good. But remember if it dries 100% then you have to reactivate an additional five minutes. Amy E: I'm excited. I cannot wait to see you with that straight hair because you came in here and it was like unruly. Yeah. What would your husband say? Unknown Speaker: Oh, I think he will love it. Amy E: Now, what are some of the common mistakes when people are applying Activator? Debbie Rees: Common mistake is that they don't saturate the hair enough. We really need to saturate the hair well so that it is soaking wet. Amy E: So it's been five minutes. Debbie Rees: Five minutes snip, snip. Amy E: After this we're going to use a flat iron on the damp hair and it might-- if it's too wet it might go. Debbie Rees: Absolutely. If we put that flat iron on hair that's overly saturated, it's going to decrease the temperature of the flat iron compromising your result. So this is actually very important short cut in the system. Amy E: Before you start the whole thing you give your client a disclaimer saying, "Warning! I'm going to be using a flat iron. It might make a noise and you'd not be alarmed. It's not your hair. It's just the moisture going --" Are you going to be scared? Unknown Speaker: Yes. Amy E: Don't be.
