Male: You’ve got to give to get. You’ve got to put out not just money, that’s easy especially when you got it but you’ve got to put out in time and effort and friendliness too.
Rebecca: Effort will get you far but it also takes wisdom to truly succeed. Hi, I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com. And today, we’ll be learning that our success is not necessarily measured by our achievements at the work place from the author of How to Succeed in anything by Really Trying.
Male: Success is personal. You have to set your own goals. You have to have you own plan. You can’t be comparing yourself to other people and you measure your success against how close are you to reaching your own potential, to reaching those goal set for yourself.
Rebecca: You mentioned there’s a large contingent of people who don’t know what success is. What is success to you?
Male: I always charge my own success. Not necessarily by where I am. But how far have I come and how many hurdles have I had to overcome to get to where I am and then if I’m close to whatever that goal was alright, I’m successful. If I reach it, I’m long term successful.
Rebecca: And how do we achieve success? You mentioned some tools that we should follow.
Male: First, you have to define in your own terms. And then you achieve by that as the title suggest by working very hard. Success does not come easily. If something happens and it’s really easy that was probably the luck but even luck you have to have some trying in there. If you want to win a lottery you have to buy a ticket then there are two tools that you have to have. You have to have knowledge and you have to have skills. There’s an old saying that knowledge is power. Well, knowledge is not power, it’s the application of knowledge that’s power.
Rebecca: A phrase we’re hearing more and more is work life balance. Now, is this something that you think is necessary or should we be throwing ourselves into our careers?
Male: I have never seen a really successful workaholic and one of the reasons why no amount of success at the office can compensate for failure at home.
Rebecca: Can you explain to us the importance of networking?
Male: It’s absolutely critical in business. And it’s important anywhere. The problem with this is a lot of folks think that there is something wrong with that. There’s nothing wrong with that if you do it correctly. And the correct way tom do it is by helping others in you network. You can help other people become successful and then they in turn will help you become successful.
Rebecca: What characteristics would you say are important to achieve success?
Male: Enthusiasm is an extremely important one. If you’ll do something with enthusiasm, you can do it forever. You have to have a passion for what you’re doing and passion and enthusiasm aren’t necessarily the same things. You have to believe that maybe I can do this. I think the person who says I can do anything, they are just setting themselves up for, you know, a whole lot of heart break. But the person who says yeah maybe I can do that. That’s another very important characteristic in success because the minute I say I can’t do that then I can’t. If I say, maybe I can, well maybe I can.
