With the countdown for the holidays under way, it's difficult to find time to decorate. Let alone come up with new ideas. So, why not take an old idea like using fruit in your decorating and transforming these into frosty sugar glaze decorations like this.
Nothing could be easier than glazing fruit as an elegant way to accent garlands, wreaths and festive holidays centerpieces. It only take two ingredients; eggs and sugar.
Start by selecting fruits that will last like traditional apples, pears, and lemons and if you plan to attach these to garlands or wreaths, go for smaller fruit; the lesser grey. You see, this is usually less expensive anyway. And make sure you try some small clusters of grapes, they look great frosted.
Now, if you plan to attach the fruit to greenery, you want to run a wire through them before starting the glazing process. I have found using a green pipe cleaner works great. Deep the fruit into a medium size bowl of six to eight egg whites. Let the excess drip off and then roll them into granular sugar. You will need to set them aside to dry for a couple of hours. It's amazing how beautiful a large centerpiece of sugar glazed fruit can look with just a little greenery which you can frost the same way. Of course, it's much easier to use larger fruit, if you are going to use it on the table this way.
Now after the holidays, you can take the fruit outside and hang it from the trees; what a great dessert for the birds. From the Garden, I am Allen Smith.
