Now one of the questions that I get all the time has to do with fairway woods, how does it work with that? Well a fairway wood is still hit from the ground; the ball is still on the ground. So, you can use a similar drill here where you go ahead and put that ball down even with it and go ahead and hit your shot.
Now with a fairway wood it may or may not get all the way down to the dirt; it might just be a little burn mark, but I do want there to be some evidence that you have been there. I have a great film of Ben Hogan hitting fairway wood shots and after each shot there is a little puff of dust after he hits. He is hitting on very hard ground in Texas, but it shows that his club is hitting the ground each time. So the club will brush the ground on the way through with the fairway wood also.
Now, here is another good one for the rams that you can use and that is to go ahead and grab a twig or a tee put it out in front of the ball, just like that. So, what you are going to do is you are going to go ahead and setup to this ball if you will like you are ready to hit it, you can go ahead and make your setup like you are going to go knock that ball out of the way, so that it's just you and the tee.
Now when you do this that tee is going to look like it's miles forward like wow! I really have to move to go get it, and you know what you do have to move to go get it. I want you to. That's part of becoming a good golfer is having that movement. When it's just you and the tee, go ahead and make your practice swing until you can make that tee disappear, that's what's going to happen. Remember that the club is hitting the dirt after the ball that means it's going into the ground when I put a tee out in front of it like that it's certainly would hit the tee each time. Now when you are really good at that you can still do the same drill only this time leave the ball there.
So we are going to make our setup. The tee is about a club head distance in front of the ball there just about like this, so it's out in front of it, go ahead and make your setup. You are going ahead and make a normal full swing at it as always trying to catch the ground after the ball.
Now that was a really nice fairway wood shot and you can see that I did get all the way down to the dirt on that particular shot and a tee is certainly gone. So this drill right on the practice driving range is a really good one to get a feel for that impact with the irons and with the fairway woods. Remember no hitting the ground with driver but anytime the ball is on the ground I want you to go for the ground after the ball, that's how we make impact.
