How to Synch iTunes on Multiple Computers
Brian Tong: What’s happening Apple Byters? I am out of town again and this time, I’d be recovering E3 in Los Angeles but I want to give you something instead of nothing for a show, so it’s all email show. But I promise we’ll be back with more news and stories next week.
Now, onto the emails, David writes, “I was wondering if I should have waited to purchase on iPod touch since we’re now having WWDC and they’re probably going to decide to release a new one this September like they do as usual.”
David, if you really want to wait for the next gen one, then sure, you can wait it out because it’s a sure thing, we’ll see a camera with the flash in the new touch that also shoots HD video and edits with iMovie. But if any of you are in the market to buy a computer then take advantage of the back-to-school promo to get and 8 gig for free right now.
Now, Sean Walker chimes in and says, “What are you hearing about a new iLife or iWorks suite being announced at WWDC? Any rumblings?”
Well, we’re still waiting on that one Sean. We haven’t even heard a peep and it’s already halfway through the year, so is Apple possibly skipping here? It’s kind of start to look that way.
Now, our friend Dave is looking for some help and this might help you guys out too. He asks, “How do you search categories or genres for Apps in the iTunes Store?”
Check this out Dave. When you’re at the iTunes store front page, instead of rushing to click where it says App Store, roll your mouse over to the word then you’ll see a little triangle on the right side, click on it and you’ll have all your categories and genres that you’re looking for. You got anything else for me? That’s what I like to call a pro tip.
Now, in more help, we’ve also had a lot of request from people about sharing their iTunes music collections. And for that, I give you Mr. Donald Bell.
Donald Bell: Hey there! I’m Donald Bell for cnet.com and today, I’m going to show you how to synch your iTunes libraries between multiple computers in your home, using a new feature in iTunes 9 called Home Sharing. It’s a great solution for those times when you buy an album or TV show on your computer and your wife or kid wants a copy on their computer too. It also comes in handy if you have laptop and a home computer whose music collection are branched apart and you’d like to get them back in synch.
The first step is to make sure all the computers in your home are running iTunes 9 or later and are connected to the web through your home router. Next, find the first computer you want to share from and select the Home Sharing icon in the left window of iTunes. If you don’t see an icon, go into the advanced menu of iTunes and select Turn Home Sharing On.
In the main window, you should see a place to plug in your iTunes store login and password. After hitting Create Home Share, repeat the same steps on the other computers in your home. iTunes only allows a maximum of five computers to be authorized, so if you’re managing more than that, choose carefully.
After you’re done, you should see each of the other libraries appear in the left window of iTunes. From here, you can browse and play any of the files and best of all; you can transfer content out of one library and into another. To quickly see just the content you don’t already have, use menu in the lower left corner to filter out the duplicates.
You can also use the Settings button in the lower right corner to automatically transfer any new iTunes store purchases between libraries. Automatic syncing works only with iTunes purchased content and applies to purchases made after the setting was switched on. So, old purchases will still need to be transferred manually. So, that’s Home Sharing in iTunes 9, a feature that makes it much easier to distribute your iTunes music and videos across all the computers in your home. For cnet.com, I’m Donald Bell.
Brian Tong: Thanks, Donald. And I just want to let you guys know that I could have show you that tip too. Now, we gave away our app magnets last week when you, the Apple Byters told us your favorite ice cream flavors but I wanted to point out a few that caught my attention. Rivero Blado’s favorite? Bubble gum pistachio. Yeah, I like to mix it up. You’re a sick man Reeve. Now, Dominique Critchlow said, “Coca Cola, orange.” That’s weird because I just threw that up last night. And Pablo Silva said, “My favorite ice cream is the one that has Megan Fox’s flavor in it.” Well Pablo, you know what’s probably really pretty looking but there’s not much too it. In fact, I’m guessing it might even be an empty edible container.
Now, we also get some interesting emails here. Dave McClain writes in with, “I just wanted to say that I find Brian to be a one funny bastard! I watch the Apple Byte segment and I don’t own anything from Apple.”
Thank you Dave, I’m sure my mom appreciates that one. And we’ll closing out the show with this one, Joe Schmo 87 writes in with, “Brian Tong is always wearing the tackiest shirts, I think it would best if he did his video segments shirtless.”
Well, you know, I’ve always said, “I’d do anything for to the Apple Byters,” so here it goes.
