Well with the cool wet spring that we had, we may be seeing a lot pest coming out. Now one of those pests might be earwig. Now earwigs love dark moist areas. Now when you got lots of rain like we did, it brings out lots of little hidings spot for these guys.
Now they are most prevalent actually in July, in August, in June when it is little warmer. They are active, they are eating, and then they become a little less active and they will lay eggs. Now they lay eggs early in spring and then in the fall.
So right now it is a great time to actually be catching them before they lay eggs so that there new offspring’s they will come out the next spring. Now a great way of taking care of them is actually not so much trough insecticides but a nice easy way to do it is actually right here,
Rolling a news paper now, if you roll up any plain news paper in stead of a conical shape, and lay it down near the base of your price plants, it will actually make a great haven for the earwigs. Now what will happen is they will come out and granted, they will do a little bit of damage to your plants. But when they are finish they will hide in this at the end of the night and then in the morning, basically it just a simple matter of either dumping them out in to a cardboard box or into a garbage can or down the sink if you would like and then you have got rid of the problem.
Now before you get too concerned about earwigs, one is they do not normally make a whole a lot of problems. You will see the problems will show up like similar to this.
Now this is actually slug damage and you can see that it got sort of a eaten areas. You often see a slug trail. Earwig damages more like shot holes. It is similar to this, we have actually reproduced this part but it will be like a little tiny shot holes all over it. That is actually the earwig damage.
Now, that may occur generally, it do not happen so much that is going to cost a plant any severe problems, it just looks a little bad. And the nice thing about earwigs is actually according to Ohio State is they will actually eat some aphids so, they are actually some what of a beneficial insect.
Now, when you look at them it might be hard to believe that but it is true. So what you can do a nice thing to do it, get a little paper and rolled up.
You are set put it down that night and then you have instant environmentally safe way of taking care of earwigs.
