Male: Well I think my main goal here is to protect all the data. So it’s constant battle on that front to go through all the workstation and a lot of times I go through and just manually will sit down his terminal and clean off any software that’s been downloaded that shouldn’t be there and apply any necessary patches or updates.
David: We updated as much as once a day, Hattie. There’s a situation going here while we we’re discovering new things all the time and were viruses. We’re some of these things come from isn’t a good guy. A good guy researcher will discover something and then publish it and then after a period of time the publishing is read by a bad guy who takes it and turns it into a virus.
So when your operating system says that it needs to be updated. Do the update. There only reasons those viruses got out was that the available update in the world wasn’t being used by people because they thought what’s weight—there’s no need to do it until a virus shows up. Well then when the virus shows up your host. You know these things don’t take months to spread around the world anymore. The blaster warns spread to 350,000 computers in 10 minutes. Okay this is an amazing thing that they are able to do.
Hattie: So do it.
David: Do it when you see the update available do it.
Hattie: So David if I buy a new computer today and new software today, its all ready going to improve my situation?
David: Yes in general. In aggregate that is true. Yes that’s true a new computer will be more secure, the new operating systems are more secure than they had been in the past.
Hattie: Because I could take that all the new stuff that’s out there and added on, pilot on my four five year old computer or four five year operating system.
David: No if you use a five year old computer the first thing you have to do is to replace your computer okay.
Hattie: I went to Redmond and the campus of Microsoft to meet Laurie Newman, marketing director for small business.
Laurie: Technology is involving and I think for the small business customer its evolving without them realizing in it.
Hattie: I’m working on a deadline. I’m always working on a deadline. I’m always in a hurry. There’s no enough time that up pops or screen are pop from you guys Microsoft is suggesting that you update your software. Do I really have to do it right then?
Laurie: Yes, you do and it’s simple. Update your software. It will only take a few minutes.
Hattie: Yeah but then I have to power down just to save my document.
Laurie: Hattie you don’t need to take the time to do that and then the next time you power up your PC it will have save the changes.
Hattie: Then on that it does it.
Laurie: It does. It’s very simple and takes the time to do it. Only it takes a few minutes.
Hattie: So what would you say to people that are just like me who haven’t upgraded hardware or software in three to four years?
Laurie: I would say take the time and make the investment upgrade. Our technology is advance so much and from the security perspective as well. Security is Microsoft and number one priority and we continue to upgrade our software and we work with the PC providers out there as well to make it simpler and easier for small business customers. It’s like airbags you know how can you imagine driving your car now without airbags?
Hattie: Okay, so we need to get the newest that we can possibly do and just go through the pain and the change and will be happier on other side.
Laurie: Absolutely. It’s for the future of your business.
Hattie: Laurie just said take the updates and we’re warning you now. Do not take any patches or updates through email. Updates will never ever come to you via email. Don’t be full, we receive these two. Looks like Microsoft security. They are not. These came through some zombie as a blended threat. An official update will look like this except these. This type of pop up will appear. We’ve got to be constantly learning and on guard.
