How to Tame Your Tennis Toss

The essential part of the serve is similar to a quarterback in Football throwing a pass. In Tennis it is the part of the motion I call Cock and Coil. With a continental or a hammer grip, the wrist is slightly cocked. This helps keep it relaxed and also sets the wrist in a position to accelerate into the hit. The coil is a turn of the shoulders and upper body to almost 45 degrees to the baseline. Like the cocked wrist coiling the upper body is the ideal way to set yourself up for maximum acceleration. From this position players will get the most out of both their first and second serves.
