Lesson five is stay, stay means that your dog remains in whatever position he or she is in when you give the stay command. Be it sit, stand or even lying down. Starting with your dog on a leash in collar, have your dog at your left side. Say the sit command and praise your dog as usual. Say stay, while putting the palm of your hand to your dog's nose and move into the position directly in front of your dog toe-to-toe as shown before.
Wait five to ten seconds with your dog in the sit and stay position. After that time has elapsed, move back into position next to your dog. Practice this five to ten times successfully before moving on to the next step. The next step is to take one step back. Once your dog is successful and remaining in the stay position, when you have taken one step back, you can increase it to two, three, four and five steps until you are at the end of your six ft leash.
Each time, when you began training with the stay command, I want you to return to your dog. Once your dog has mastered this, and it is staying very reliably, you can occasionally use the come command. Your dog will learn to predict what you are going to do next. So try to mix it up, keep it fun. It's going to keep your dog's attention and make it more exciting and enjoyable for both of you.

Once your dog is good at doing it this way, you can take several steps back and keep continuing until you are at the end of your leash.
Each time, I want you to return to your dog like this. Again, if you feel it's necessary to repeat the stay command before returning to your dog, go ahead and do so. But you are going to want to lean off of that as soon as possible. So you remember Pausch, let's try the stay command with him. Stay, since Pausch seems to be successful at this distance, we will try it from a couple of steps away.
Again, I want to start where I put him in the sit position good boy. Stay and then move away. Now, if your dog is successful at this distance, you can keep taking several streps back until you are at the end of your leash and you can also add a light line such as a close line to your dog's collar.
