How to Test Your Garden Soil's pH Level
Spring is here. For me, it's one of the busiest times in the garden. But, it's also one of the most fun times of the garden. I'm Patti Moreno the garden girl. I've already planted a variety of cool weather crops. Before I plant this bed, I'm going to check the pH level of the soil. What is pH? Well, pH measures whether your soil is acidic, neutral or alkaline. It ranges on a scale from one to 14 with seven being neutral. Most plants thrive when your soil has a pH around 6.2 to seven which is basically neutral. But if you're going to plant blueberries, you're going to want to make sure tat your soil is much more acidic. If you're going to plant lilacs, they like a more alkaline soil.
If your pH level is too high or too low, then your plant is not going to be able to access the nutrients in the soil. I'm going to use the soil stick to test my pH level in the soil. Do you remember your grammar school science class days? This is one of the most easy things that you could do to test the pH in your soil.
It's really important that you remove any mulch on top of your soil. Then, go down at least two inches. Take the little scoop that comes with your soil stick and fill it with soil. Place the soil in the tube and then pop one tablet in. Fill the tube with water to the line and then cover it back up with the scoop. Shake the tube until the tablet is dissolved and then set it aside.
The soil will settle at the bottom and you'll get your results in about two minutes. Amend your soil using a soil stick in the manual chart. If you want your soil to have a higher pH, add limes. To lower your soil’s pH, you're going to want to add sulfur. I think my soil stick is done. Now that looks like it's around 6.5 to me. A neutral pH range is between a 6.2 and seven, so this bed is ready to be planted with any type of vegetable I want.
Now I got some blueberry bushes in the front, I'm going to go check the soil over there and make sure that the acidity level is correct because I want to have amazing harvest of blueberries year after year.
I'm Patti Moreno the garden girl, thanks for watching.
