Mauricio Balvanera: Today on AppJudgment we are tethering our jailbroken iPhone.
Male Speaker: No, no what are we doing?
Mauricio Balvanera: We're tethering our iPhone which breaks the AT&T turn to service contracts, so I just I don't want to get caught.
Male Speaker: Until it's illegal or if you feel like you're breaking the law.
Mauricio Balvanera: Well, it's kind of comfortable.
AppJudgment
Male Speaker: Yeah, you are right this is kind of comfortable.
Mauricio Balvanera: Yeah, how is it?
Male Speaker: Yeah, good.
Mauricio Balvanera: Welcome to App Judgment revision3's mobile phone application review show. I am Mauricio Balvanera the resident jailbroken iPhone user. Tethering set thing promise to us long ago with the release of the iPhone 3.0 firmware. I am talking of course about the ability to use your iPhone's 3G data connection on your desktop or a laptop computer to access the web from anywhere.
Now, I'm in to that MyFi user which gives me Wi-Fi for me and up to five other users on the uncongested Verizon network but at 60 bucks a month, I got admit this privilege is a little on the spendy side. No river had a legit application in the app store called Net Share back in 2008, but it was promptly pulled down by Apple and hoops didn't mean or approve that gesture.
So after over year it being teased I just about had it that's why I'm going to cover a few options for using your phones unlimited data plan by phone tethering. But before we do so I have to say think long and hard before you tether your phone, its not illegal so quit being dramatic it is however breaking the terms of service contract you sign with AT&T, your lifeline to spotty phone calls and data plans. If you get slapped with the hefty bill get blackball from the network or some other unknown consequence, don't say it didn't warn you, so don't tether your phone.
Okay, so on to tethering your phone, the first thing you'll have to do for most options I'm reviewing today is jailbreaker phone. Hit over to App Judgment episode 44 for a quick and completely painless tutorial using GeoHot's Blackra1n. Again jailbreak at your own risk, you will be voiding your phone's warranty, backup your phone before you do this because you can't screw-up your phone if you do something wrong. Also do not upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3, the update literally does nothing but triple the ability to jailbreak, my scare tactics are heavy today, aren't they?
All right, after you've jailbroken head over to the rock app store and search from MyWi, the app is going to run you $9.99 and a rock will guide you through an amazon.com or PayPal payment procedure. Once you got installed tethering really couldn't be any easier. Step one turn on Wi-Fi tether, step two connect to Wi-Fi device on your computer done, seriously done, go Google something. Your home screen will have a nifty status bar locking your usage do yourself a favor and keep things safe by adding WEP security. You also have the added option of using Bluetooth or USB tethering which shows up as Ethernet adaptor in your network settings, easy PC.
All right, MyWi has proven its worth let's take a look at a few more tethering options available to skin this cat. Option number two, the most promising sounding hack has been the option that allows you to tether without even jailbreaking your phone. Go to the URL below in your phone Safari, scroll down the tethering after carefully reading all of the warnings, select your country then your career then download, now the problem is at the three phones that I have tried each running various OS versions I have always received that in valid profile prompt. You might have better luck if you are not in the U.S. and I am sure this hack will be fixed soon but I like my hacks to work now.
So option number three, PDA net was the first app I use to tether and it works great on your jailbroken iPhone. However, connection to your computers ad hoc network is buggy and USB mode requires a desktop client, plus the weasels don't tell you the app is a 14 day trial and then cost you $30 until after you installed, nice.
All right option number four, using open SSH is nice and free but it requires jailbreaking then installation of SSH on your iPhone then open up terminal and enter the command sudo I lost interest at open up terminal, oh look command not found too bad. And finally option number five, iPhone Modem comes closest to impressing me at $10 it works nearly the same as MyWi except it requires a creation of an add hoc network on your computer much like PDA net with the client side application. This means only one computer can be tethered to your phone at one time.
All right, now review was supposed to be a side-by-side comparison but frankly I don't want to waste your time just go straight to MyWi, its $10 but don't be cheap want your cake and eat a kind of geek it beats out the free USB tethering options by providing a Wi-Fi hotspot tethering as opposed to just single user USB tethering at least without having a enable additional add hoc networks or Internet sharing. This means you can connect a multiple devices all at once much like my Verizon MyWi.
Now I've had let connecting to multiple computers to a single Bluetooth share point with other software but not consistently and not without time consuming network pairing. The home screen status bar is great in case you forget the turn off tethering; USB and Bluetooth tethering it work without having to install client side apps to run the only judgment I'm going to give here today is for the MyWi and that is of course the download stamp of approval.
All right, you all make the judgment on the remaining apps go to the URL below and vote for your favorite tethering app. Tell us why your app works better especially if you've had luck with the unjailbroken hack, if you have any app suggestions email us at appjudgment@revision3.com or hit us up on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter or subscribe to our home page. I'll see you soon.
Male Speaker: Oh, my eyes are all okay.
Mauricio Balvanera: Okay.
Male Speaker: Damn it, no, you're \right, this is kind of comfortable.
Mauricio Balvanera: Yeah, how is it?
Male Speaker: It's nice.
Mauricio Balvanera: Okay.
