Hi! I’m Jane Cullum, I’m a potter and the co- owner of Manassas Clay in Manassas, Virginia. Today I’m going to show you how to wedge clay throw a cylinder. Trim that cylinder and add a handle, and then glaze the resulting mug. Throwing is a skill and it improves with practice.
To do this process, you’re going to need some supplies and materials including a batter’s wheel. I’m also going to need a bucket of warm water and a few tools. A plastic bat, sponge, right angle web, wire, wooden knife, needle tool, dough and some trimming tools. To get some of this supply is you’re going to define a pottery or a pottery store or check online for the specialized pottery equipment. There are a few safety considerations. First of all, some of the tools are sharp and you need to be careful with them.
Second, when you’re mixing glazers you need to wear a mask and third you want to remove any jewelry before you start making a pot. Before, we get started I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself, I’ve been making pots for over 30 years and along with my cook partner, we’ve had Manassas Clay for 11 years.
Pottery is a process; it’s a series of steps that you do and to shape the clay on the potter’s wheel. It takes practice, it takes steadiness, and it takes patience but it is a lot of fun. So let’s get started.
