Hey, guys welcome to MartialSkill, I am Sean Daily, I have with me today Pat Brown. Today we are going to be talking about, the basic jab and Praying Mantis system and this really requires to all fighting. But we are going to talk about, where we learned it in our 7 star Praying Mantis style.
So you need to have a fast jab, whether you are a boxer or a kung fu fighter, it really doesn't matter what you do. The jab is one of the most important weapons in your arsenal and most people quite frankly, don't do jabbing properly or they don't do it quick enough to be able to strike it well, which is what we see. We want to be almost strike it well and praying mantis kung fu, is very focused on hand skill. And that's something we work on all the time.
So I am going to show you some things today about, basic technique for the jab. It also, helps you to accelerate the speed of your jab, so that you can strike over time or learn to strike without being able to be stopped by your opponent and that's a very good thing.
So we will start with just some basics. We use shadow hand position a lot. So shadow hand is one hand the shadow can gather. You don't want to have your -- you see a lot of people fight like this, right? A little stiff, a kind of defense and this climbs it up like this, what's the problem with this? If Pat strikes me, my hand is going to fly into my own face. That's not a good thing and believe me, it can happen. Being out here, like the old English style boxing, probably that's not good either.
So you want to be relaxed. So your fighting style should be relaxed and ready. Okay, but not tense, and tension is the enemy. So that's one of the things, we definitely want to eliminate, all tension, you should be completely relaxed, even if you are not think yourself positive, be relaxed anyway.
So you have to relax your mind and body. This will help making you move fast. So the jab, we don't want to be clenching our fist. In this style we are going to clench our fist. We are going to make this into a fist as it comes out, it becomes a solid object, okay. And what I want you to think of, is I want to forget about, fright. I want you to forget about punching. Because as soon as you see somebody punch, they get stiff and they go punch and their body is rigid and tense and the shoulders don't move.
And if said reach out and touch something, you would do this, touch because you know that touch, okay. Jabbing should be no different, except when you are going to jab, you are going to put that touch off, with a little bit more force and speed. So, if I say, for example, touch the wall as quick as you can or touch the point in the air -- right there, nice and quick, right? Shouldn't be any different when you are punching with the jab is what we have punch.
Now notice, that I am not going to straighten my shoulders and I am going to straighten my body portion. I want to deliver this energy and let it return as quickly as possible. So when you punch, you should go all the way out to full extension, letting your shoulders rotate, as necessary to let that happen and right back. Okay, so we should end up, from same position, so in slow motion, we go punch and back, punch, solid fist here, and it's gone after that. That's the only place we need to be at fist. It doesn't serve us being at fist here, because that's going to slow us down. So in fast motion, boom, boom! Like that. That's, or you can get faster? Forgetting that it's punch.
This is a little speed drill -- find partner, and this is one of the ways, you'll be able to test your jabbing speed, we do this all the time. So extend your hand all the way, okay. So you start right here, and you have probably see this before on another videos we have done. Go ahead and pull that back.
Now the trick is pass into punch and I am going to try, to pull this hand away, before he can strike it. Okay, there you good, nice. That's it.
So you want to follow that through, go ahead, there you go and there you go. So I to try, so we'll switch now. One of the trick of that is to extend through, so don't be like oh! shit, I miss this points, hand back follow through, because there's so many who move their head back, would you stop? No, you want to continue through that, alright.
So the other part of it, not calligraphic, your body should be completely still. If I go there are so many tellers, there's a chain martial artist. Even a descent basic fighter is going to be - noticed all the things you do all you tell us. Your shoulders, your eyes all that tension in your body. If you are completely still and you punch, you are not going to have any notice. So you want to be able to punch without calligraphy. Good every time.
But if I go if I get tensed, now I'll put up anyway, okay you see that tension. I am warning it, he sees that, he sees my eyes, my shoulder all that stuff, I am exaggerating a little bit. So you want to be able, to go -- every time. Okay, basics of jab. I'll continue with that again, but for now practice that, you should be able to do in front of a mirror and not even be able to see your own hand. Think about flicking off the water, of your hand, flick, flick like that and then turn it into a punch. Okay, see you next time.
