How to Throw a Dinner Party Part I
Melvin Silverstein: Hi! I'm Melvin Silverstein with House Trends Magazine, welcome to another segment of the Defining Design. Susan?
Susan: In this episode we’re going to show you how to throw a fabulous dinner party. So the idea of this dinner party is autumn party. So I've come up with great colors, sort of typical autumn colors orange and yellows and red. And I'm going to mix up my china, thanks for my grandmother and mother, kind of mix those up between the different place settings. And I'm going to do a little flower arrangements. So let’s see if I pull that all together.
Well here’s our table décor all finished. I've mixed up the china and we’ve got every other place setting has a different china; I've mixed up my glassware. I think that’s really a creative way and a nice way to make a table stay interesting as well as be a conversation piece for your guest. You want an element of surprise, something that people haven’t seen, something different. So when you get to the table people are saying, “Wow this is an interesting idea, something fun.” And it’s going to be a success.
As you can see, these are the three different places. And here I’ve used my grandmother’s china and one of my pottery books falls for the suit. And each place setting has a different napkin ring which is kind of fun. And I've used different glasses so we’ve got water and wine but each one is a different, every place setting goes with each set of glasses so that’s kind of fun.
Over here you can see the set of next pattern, you can even see that this one is more of a fall theme with the apples. This is more of a pottery that -- even china that I've picked up in an antique malls. So sometimes if you go to an antique mall and want something, you know you don’t find a place setting before, it’s kind of nice to mix and match.
And finally the last setting is this small pottery and they’re actually more of an Italian pottery, look. So I've mixed the three together which really makes an interesting dinner party. I have mixed the different napkin rings but kept the same color napkins so that’s kind of more of a consistency, which you do want. You don’t want to look anything too confusing.
And the fun about a dinner party is kind of having something for your guest to do. So I've come up with this little wine tasting cards so the guests are going to be able to grade their wine as we got to each course. It will be a fun conversation piece and it’s got funny little sayings so I think we’ve got everything ready and the table is set with low candles. I haven’t done flowers yet but that is my next step, is putting the flowers together.
I finished the flower, they are low arrangement perfect for great conversation between people. The mums, the Gerber daisies, the small little baby roses and these cabbage leaves that I've decorated around the edge. This is going to be the perfect accent to my table setting.
