How to Tie the Perfect Bow with a Ribbon

There’s a technique to tying ribbon around a gift box to give it a flat bottom so that it sits evenly on a table. The trick is to twist the ribbon at the top of the box instead of at the bottom to avoid having a bump at the bottom of the box that causes it to wobble on the surface.

I’m going to show you how to tie a perfect bow. You start by determining how much ribbon you want to leave for the bow. I make half a bow so I can see what the finish size is going to be. And then holding the ribbon to the top of the box you wrap around in one direction and you get back to the top, fold the short end over, turn and start going around in the other direction. Then you get back up to the top again, match the ribbon up so you can cut even lengths. And then take that open piece and tuck it underneath the twist.

Now, pull on both ends in different directions and you’re ready to make the bow. And now you have a perfect bow with a flat bottom that will sit evenly on your table.
